German Drilling - What's It Worth? - The Firearms Forum

I have a German drilling that was left to me by my father and I hope that I can find more information about it and possibly what it might be worth. My father was with the 8th ID "Pathfinders" during WWII. According to him (he is deceased now 40 yrs) when his company crossed the Rhine they entered a large mansion and found a gunroom with weapons from floor to ceiling in cases along all four walls. He took two cavalry sabers and the drilling as souvenirs and shipped them home. I received them upon his death.

The barrels are marked thusly: Left barrel - Krupp Stahl & Nitro. On top is - Neundorf B./STHL or SUHL - it's difficult to read. Underneath the barrel is a crown S, crown W, crown U, 16 in a circle & 1 7/1.

Right barrel - Krupp Stahl & Nitro. on top is - H. Fleischmann. Underneath it is marked the same as the left.

Underneath the rifle barrel is the number 541 which appears in several different places on the gun. The rest of the markings on the rifle barrel are - crown G, crown E, crown U, 8.8mm above the number 72. On the right side beneath the rifle barrel is - crown K.m.G, N 13gn.

When you open the breach three pins rise to show the three barrels are ready to fire. If you push the tang forward on the top of the stock a rifle sight rises on the barrels and the triggers become set triggers.

I'll try to attach photos when I fugure out how.

Krupp stahl means Krupp steel, high quality steel. The Nitro means the gun is suitable for smokeless powder. The shotgun barrels are 16 gauge, the rifle barrel is 9.3x72R.

Fleischmann is the barrel maker, Neundorf the gun maker.

The crown S, W, and U are proofmarks, respectively for smooth bore barrels, choked barrels and definitive proof. The crown G and E are proofs for rifled barrels and "express" (high power) rifled barrels. K m G N 13 gm means the barrel was proved with a 200 grain copper jacketed bullet using Nitro powder

I won't give value, but will say that that drilling is a very nice one and should be quite valuable. You might check auction sites and some of the sites devoted to double guns and drillings.

I have no idea about price, but I saw this yesterday and the craftsmanship looked extremely nice, a beautifull piece you have there, that should have some value, if authentic and high quality as it appears to be, if it were mine, and had been my Dad's, I would not want to part with it, but I would certainly want to know the value of it, just like you,
