He did this in front of the people who ran this as part of a demonstration.

Look up john the cracker.

What everyone has to understand is there are 3 groups of hackers.

Black Hat

White Hat

Gray Hat

Black Hat hackers are out there looking to steal from whom ever. They are the ones that write viruses and malware.

White Hat hackers are the guys who work for the government or private businesses they will get paid to hack companies web sites and what not. This is by far one of the highest paid jobs in all of the IT world.

Gray Hats might do some bad things but normally they don't steal or harm anyone.

Here is what you need to make sure you are doing.

1. Keep your AV (Free or paid for) UP TO DATE.
2. Make sure you clean your system up once a month to once a week. Running mal ware scans by Super Antispyware, malarebyts, or Spy Bot S&D.
3. Make sure your computer is current on all updates and make sure you have auto updates turned on.
4. Make sure to use any browser except for IE. I use chrome and firefox except at work then I only use IE to run network admin software that is intranet only.
5. Make sure you are running adblock Plus on your browser.
6. Make sure your windows firewall is turned on.
7. STOP installing TOOL BARS with other installs. Tool bars no matter what they do are havens for malware. All them cute puppie today, and Free stuff tool bars will kill you.

Free AV I like
Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...e.aspx?q=virus

AVG AntiVirus 2013 Free http://download.cnet.com/AVG-AntiVir...-10320142.html

avast! Free Antivirus http://www.avast.com/index

I have been running Microsoft Security Essentials ever since it came out. I have yet to have a single problem with any of my 4 PC's. 1 of which stays on 24-7 as it is the hub of my Home Theater System.

So can't blame the kids 100%...
Good post. People forget that if somebody has physical access to the computer, it's just a matter of time and effort before they get TOTAL access.

Hey Jim, I don't like that part, every time, even half of the time is a big red flag for me!

I've known people who've said "every time so-in-so is here my computer is...".

First do you know how to check his online history it's easy or is he clever enough to erase it before he leaves? As a general rule he must be going somewhere or doing something he should not be doing.

I'd start there if you can then lay down some rules -or- he must use his own. I'd also try to strict password him out.....if you can, also it's hard to see 100% of what/where someone is online.

Kids (like some adults too) can do some stupid things.

mjp, I don't know how to check the history and I am sure he knows how to erase where he has been. However, when he is on the computer I am normally sitting with him reloading or working on something. He is always in the same room as me. I know he does not visit and X-rated sites, but the thing is I can't watch every move. So if he goes to a gaming site and nit warns him to not go there but chooses to go in anyway without telling me then it is an invite for trouble. From now on I will go onto the website with him and if it warns me that it is a bad site then I will block that website. I am learning.

In addition to Adblock, I'd recommend installing NoScript for firefox...works wonders on those game sites.

One online site he went to is notdoppler.com. Has anybody heard of this? If it is the one I am thinking of, I could hear some terrible wrap music with foul language so I made him get off.

cpttango30 very good information. I am in the business also. If people follow your guidelines they wouldn't run into as many problems. But then they wouldn't need us.

Yes then go and look at the detailed checks by date, etc. Every site visited will be there.

**EDIT ADD by date, site, most visited, etc BUT be careful before you HIT on them...but you will see a lot! (unless erased!)

If you have a GOOGLE toolbar just hit the down arrow at the end of the box to see everything googled.

Funny alright! Hmmmmm, where or what is he doing?

I'm a bit of a cleanning fanatic, run CCleaner often for routine stuff, IF YOU WANT you can check extra boxes to practically clean out everything including histories, autofills, the works....pain is trying to remember all the useful wiped out stuff.

Also I have Registry Mechanic, use it weekly, but remember to do registry backups! It generally does them automaticlly.

This is why I build my own computers, and no one else uses them. And there's two ways to password protect your computer, one way it won't even boot until the password's been entered. Most people don't use that one as it's a royal pain if you ever forget it. I've had computers given to me because of it, lol... I just wipe them and reload the OS.

Any password can be beat given enough time and effort.

But HB doesn't have to worry about anybody using his new laptop.

True, but using passwords with the maximum amount of characters, using letters, numbers, special characters as well as both upper and lower case make it a hell of a lot tougher than anyone other than a professional hacker or an extremely lucky individual to succeed at it, not likely a kid wanting to go to a gaming site would make the effort to try, which is what the OP is about.

An 8 character password using this method has 7.2 Quadrillion possibilities...
