Just Going To Start Reloading 8X56R

Anybody got any recipes? I have 4 reloading manuals, not one has anything for this round. Going to a gun show tomorrow, maybe I can find something. I got nice proper sized (.329') boolets and Prvi Partizan cases. Just waiting for my Lee dies to come in. Hoping the dies will have some loads, but want to be ready with a correct powder so I can start immediately.

It's not in most manuals.

I think it should be listed with a couple of loads in Cartridges of the World.

Is it an 8x56R Mannlicher or Hungarian as I believe they are different?

Straight pull bolt action.

M95/S34, not Hungarian.

This load uses PMC LR Berdan primers and Nazi brass.Used to use Norma and RWS Berdan primers but I ran out.Velocity was thru chronograph.Shoots 1" @ 50 and well under 21/2 @ 100yds, usually 11/2 with a flyer or two.Load is consistant in both of our M95 carbines and shows minimal pressure signs. Please work up carefully.Load also has been proven with Grafs Boxer prime brass, but not as tight a group.

Got this load off soon to be defunct surplus military rifle .com .Listed as a start load I haven’t yet gone farther as I was satisfied with the groups.Shoots 21/2" @ 100 with 3 shots w/in 1.75" and 2 flyers to open it up. Minimal pressure sign in our M95s,and pleasant to shoot.

Worked up to thid load gien to me by fellow milsurper...Use Nazi brass and Berdan primers...originally RWS and Norma,now I use PMC as its all I can get.Groups are tight 3/4"@50 and under 2" @ 100...limited by the poot sights & trigger.Load is consistant in both my Steyrs.Minimal pressure signs in my guns.

Worked up to this load from Surplusrile.com.They qoute a 50.0gr. max and I stopped here at the start load because it grouped less than 2"@ 100.Best load yet I got with Grafs Boxer primed brass.

What weight of a bullet will you be shooting? The original military load featured a 200 gr. round nose at 2350 fps. I have not been able to find specific info for your cartridge, I wonder if you could take 8X57 loading data and reduce it by 1/3 as a starting point. I know you will want to stay on the low side of 45,000 cup. Will keep looking for some data, pretty sure I might have seen loads in a old rifleman. Best reguards Kirk

I would advise disregarding all of the 8x56R data listed at handloads.com / handloads.org.

All 6 loads shown there appear to be from the same person (using 2 different ID's), and gauging from the above 2 loads, that person seems to have trouble with typos (H4859 and H4595?).

I tried to email both of the ID's using the site's built-in email tool; both email addresses (yahoo accounts) bounced.

I think it's apparent what powders he meant, but I wouldn't want to rely on any of this data, given the penchant for typos and/or transpositions.

I found some data in Cartridges of the world book. Listed as 8x56r Hungarian Mannlicher. They list .329 bullet, 198 gr., 46 grs of 3031, mv 2310, and Mil bullet, whatever that means, 206 gr, 45 grs of 3031, mv 2300.

I ended up using 50 grains of Accurate 4350. Seems to shoot OK. This is probably the best my eyes will do with iron sights and 100 yards:

I can't shoot that well at 50, with mine.

That was with the Hornady 205 grain bullets, right? How was recoil?


BTW, my only load so far was with the .329" 205 grain Hornady spire point bullet, over 40 grains of H4350, in Graf's 8x56R (ppu) brass. Much too light, the cases didn't expand enough to seal properly. Mentioning it just in case someone is looking for a light load... you'll want to adjust a little higher.

Some, but none using my two favorite powders H4895 and IMR 4895. I can use H4350, but I do Not use it on any of my other rifle rounds..

Found a sight tonight using 45 grains and a 200 grain bullet, I can experiment a bit there. A 50 grain IMR 4350 load. I show data for a 205 grain bullet with a charge of 42.0 to 45.0 grains of H4898. I found one load with a 205 grain.330" bullet and 35.0 grains of IMR 4895., which should not be that different from the H4895 powder.
