20 ga Marshwood double - The Firearms Forum

I'm not sure how old this Marshwood 20 ga double is, it's serial number is 28333. I striped all the bluing and rust off and see no cracks. Woyld it be ok to shoot a low brass load?? What concerns should I have? Thanks for any help!

IIRC, Marshwood is a name used by Crescent Firearms that would make guns with your company's name or brand on it. It appears they did this fairly often. I really don't know much about that company you could wiki or google it.

As far as shooting it, why take a chance?

H&D Folsom was a large sporting goods distributors from the Early 1900 until the 1930s. They supplied sporting goods to retailers all across the United States, whatever their customers wanted. Many of the retailers wanted their own names on the products and H&D were glad to oblige. On firearms, for as little as a 12 gun order , and you pay for the roll die, they would stamp anything you wanted. For example if you owned Bubba's Hardware chain, you could have the guns imprinted with " Bubba's Gun Company ", made the locals think you had your own empire. Since H&D owned their own Gun Company, Crescent Gun Company, they had an edge in price on their competitors. Marshwood was a trade name used on Crescent made Shotguns furnished to and sold by Charles Williams Stores of New York. The only real concern is to check the chamber length, other wise it should be safe to shoot normal loads, however you should have it checked by a competent gunsmith before shooting it.. We have a contributor , Anchor Clanker who may be able to give you a manufacture date. He is a collector of these shotguns. I would guess the mid 1920s to the early 1930s Crescent was purchased by Stevens/Savage in the Early 1930s. Research shows the Charles Williams store was quite a large store in New York City. you can find their 1928 catalog for sale on the Internet. Hope that helps.

Need to know if the gun is a hammer type or hammerless to tell the year. On all there different models and types of double barrels (five at least) Crescent started with serial number 001 and went from there.
