Hi IB,

If memory serves, (been afflicted with CRS for years), the Routledge barrel is for shot shells. I've seen some Remingtons that have had the last 15" or so of the barrel bored out to about .410 diameter, even though the chamber is for .22 cal.

HTH, Jay

Depending on how deep the counterbore is,it might have been done to protect the crown.

The early Winchester model 61 22 shot rifles were Routledge bored. I heard the only reason for this was to give them more of a shotgun appearance. The later 61 shot only rifles were normal .22 size at the muzzle.

One more thought,
If the bore is rifled,it could have been done to give maximum velocity and a long sight plane.
Supposedly,a 22 LR reaches maximum velocity in 14".
This is too short for legal barrel length (16"),and a longer barrel gives a longer sight plane.
Some dedicated 22 LR AR 15 uppers have 14" barrles with "bloop tubes" spot welded on to gain legal length for this reason.
