Just one thing I wanted to know before I get a lever action after completing basic training (DEP, ship out in Aug 08!).
Is a Marlin 336 a good gun? Anything thing else good for under $500? EDIT I just read up on it some more and it looks like the gun has to be rebarreled and get other mods to go from 30/30 to 308. I will just take the 30/30.

Simply put --------------NO!
![]() The 308 Marlin Express is closer to - though not interchangeable with - the .307 Winchester. The .308 Marlin operates at a higher pressure than the .30-30 and the rifles are built to handle it.

You can NOT interchange 30 WCF (aka ".30-30") and .308 Marlin Express.
They're based on different cases. The Marlin 336 is an EXCELLENT rifle. I own one and love it as a deer rifle for Georgia. Mine is in .30-30. I don't know how well the .308 Marlin Express will last through the years. The .30-30 is over 100 years old as a cartridge and is still one of the highest-selling cartridges of all time. |
