Default Russian space agency arms cosmonauts. No kiidding. Article attached from NRA

May 2004. Rifleman. page.42

"Cosmonauts Pack Heat"

"Russian spacecraft are routinely equipped with sawed off shotguns , but not to ward of hostile aliens. According to an AP story, a Russian spacecraft in the 60's overshot its touchdown spot by some 2,000 miles, landing the crew in a forest inhabited by hungry wolves. A shortgon is placed on every manned spacecraft".

A great idea, except, it might be damaged in the landing. A Makarov attached to the Cosmonauts suit with a few extra clips is a far better idea. Your thoughts please.

If I were to choose - Shotgun!

1. Defense
2. Small Game getter
3. Weapon (swinging weapon that is)
4. First Aid (crutch if injured)
5. How could I forget! Aliens - Duh

It's a start! I'm sure there are several ways to utilize the shotgun if needed!

Its very thoughtful of the Russians, but when you think about it, how many occupants have really survived any spacecraft accident to worry about being eaten by wolves? My primary concern would be not to burn up on rentry or not to get blow to bits at liftoff., but still , better safe than sorry.

I figure that there was a reason they gave the cosmonauts the shotgun. Something must have happened to provoke that fear...

Russia is a huge country and most of it is completely undeveloped. Wolves (which sadly the commies tried to hunt to extinction) are all over the place. And they haven't necessarily learned a fear of man, yet. Maybe after landing in that 1960s incident, the cosmonauts saw a wolf, or bear, or whatever.

I think it could be a very real scenario. Land in wintertime after surviving an Apolo 13 style cataclysmic failure. Everyone rejoices. Then cosmonauts get eaten by wolves two hours before retreival... :-(

Okay. Maybe not probably, but definately in the realm of possiblitiy.
