Default Thanks for the welcome

Guesses so far have been a Madesen-Jensen or a Minie Jaeger, I thought this firearm forum could help I don't think it was Made in Japan, if so we will have to change history. Anyways it just bugs me, I get obsessed about little details like this.

Thanks

Can't help with the M-1. But I bet someone around here can.

They'll figure out this civil war rifle before they quit.

Hi Tiger.....welcome to TFF.

Closest I can find (in Flayderman's) in the Confederate Longarms section:

Mendenhall, Jones & Gardner Contract Rifle...styled after the U.S. Model 1841....made under contract for the state of North Carolina. Marked on the lockplate "M.J.&G./NC"

There's also a "Morse Inside Lock Musket" made by George W. Morse, Greenville, SC in 1864.

Those are the only ones I could find that might be referred to as "M i j".......however the CSA used a lot of captured U.S. firearms, and purchased a whole bunch of European arms also, so, who knows??????

Default Thanks for the info!

Only one was issued and I have often wondered about the poor sap that received that weapon, did he get his ammo? If it was a Morse Carbine it would seem rather early for that weapon (1862), the Mendenhall , Jones sounds like a better bet.

Thanks for all of the help. If I find any more period references I will keep you posted. I may look in the old reference books.

The Mendenhall, Jones & Gardner sounds very likely. It's unlikely anyone will ever know for sure.

Try a gun show, that would be the best bet. That's where I found mine.
