How rare are the Mosin-Nagant 1891's with the hexagon receiver? I have a 91/30 and would like to have an original 1891 to go with it.

How much should I expect to pay for one in good condition?

The 1891 MN was produced with the hex receiver. The round receiver was not introduced until the 1930s with the Model 91/30. Even so, the earlier runs of 91/30 Mosins were built with the hex receivers.

There are a number of M1891 variants and many of the original rifles were canibalized to produce other models. Dragoons, Cossacks, and rifles built by Remington, Westinghouse, and Chatterault all bring a premium. Rifles with US property marks and/or Finn "capture" marks, also tend to be a bit more expensive. Rifles with multiple features of interest can bring a nice dollar.

A plain vanilla 1891 can still be had for comfortably under $200. There are still a few dust covered relics languishing on the racks in pawn shops with tags identifying them as "Mausers" or somesuch.

The original M91 can still be found. Aim Surplus had some a few months ago in good condition for something like $75 a piece. I ordered one and ended up with a 1900-dated example (with the Imperial crest scrubbed off, as expected).

I would just keep an eye on the online auction sites for one to pop up. They're out there.

One of my hex receivers is a Finnish M39. It still has the Tzar's Double Headed Eagle, a very faint Soviet mark and of course the Finnish proof. Best of all under the tang is the date of manufactrure 1897. This ol' rifle has seen around four wars; what stories it could tell.
