I faintly see a light at the end of the tunnel on re-doing my H&R Model 12 Stock. Got the pistol grip finished (the biggest part of the project), the butt plate (Rosewood) installed, and everything sanded down to 220 grit. Glass bedded the barrel and action this morning and it is now hardening. After that is done, I'll sand the stock to 600 and stain a light Walnut color on the Beechwood. While that is drying, I'll lap the barrel as I really don't think the U.S. Government I know and love would buy Model 12's with lapped barrels...LOL
When the stain is dry, I'll apply a finish coat...For the pistol grip, I sanded the sides of the issue pistol grip flat on each side and the front, then glued Walnut pieces on the three sides to build up a grip that is similar to many of the grips on benchrest stocks. I put a piece of Rosewood on the bottom of the grip for a grip cap. I pinned the grip cap and butt plate with pins I had made using 1/8" brass tubing, with a smaller square brass tube inside it, and a small brass pin inside it. Used black epoxy to glue the tubes and pin together, then cut to the length I needed. The pins are exposed, and when buffed will look good... Really looks neat now!!! I'm about a day away from a shooting session at the range!!!!!!!!!! Don

The stock is stained and hanging up in the shop drying. The barrel is lapped and everything ready to do the finish coat on the stock. Gotta get some pix. Youngest son drove the 200 miles from Detroit for father's day weekend. We plan on a full day at the range shooting rimfires. The high for the day is supposed to be 63 degrees, with no chance of rain (finally).

Put the final coat of finish on the stock this morning... It's drying now..
The finish takes 5 hours to dry. I put it on at 10:15AM. At 3:16PM I'll be installing the barrel and action in the stock in prep for shooting it tomorrow morning... Can't wait... I'd shoot it this afternoon, but it's raining today... LOL Don

Finished.... I was just pondering when I'm going to do my next one..... After much cogitation, I figgerd I'd do the next one around the turn of the century..... I got a ton of hours in this one. Now, all I have to do is go shoot it manyana... Kant wate, DB

It shoots....
The rifle sure shoots good. I shot it this morning. It shoots as good as it looks... Yahooie... I have a bunch of pictures taken that I'll get developed as soon as I finish this post( I'm still in the dark ages with a 35mm camera). I checked 6 different lots and brands of ammo. All shot well into 3/8" groups except one. Had one 1/2" group with my old stand by, Wolf Match Target. I did have one 1/4 inch group too. The combination of lapping the barrel and glass bedding it did the trick. I used a 32X scope. I'm off to Rite Aide, Don

To Don Buckbee,
I also have a M 12 that I love. Would you explain how you lapped the barrel and the advantages over one not lapped. Did you do accuracy tests before and after? Pete |

Lapping a barrel smoothes out the tool marks, and polishes the bore.
I use a tight fitting patch loaded with JB Bore Paste and run that patch through the bore 100 strokes. I've done that to a number of rifles, both rimfire and centerfire with accuracy improvement in every one. Clean up is a mess, but well worth it. Don
