I am new to the black powder deal. I got a traditions 50 cal simliar to a hawken. I am shooting 348gr HP powerbelt bullets over 120gr of triple 7. Groups are good enough for hunting. But I don't have a crony so could some one help me out and tell me if I have enough knock down power for your average 250lb hog? The range is under 100yrds. Secondly which is better for hunting pellets or powder? Also do you pack the pellets like powder or not? This is not an inline.
Thanks Ray

Shot placement is most important on a tough ole' hog.
Powerbelt has a great web site that lists ballistics for their bullets using 100 and 150 grains of pyrodex using a 28" barrel. At 100 grains and at 100 yards that 348 grain slug is moving about 1300 fps. More than enough to stop a pig. I'd ask traditions if you can use the pellets - it should be in the owners manual - they'll send you one if you do not have one. You do not need to pack the 50 grain pellets - it crushes the hole in the middle that helps proper ignition of the pellet. Good luck with yer smokepole. ISB
