Default 22RF fired in 17HMR!!!! It fired!!!!

Last night I had a call from a friend who asked me about "the gun that had been at the hunting cabin for 6 months". It was a 17 HMR SAVAGE and he asked his son why the kid that owned it hadn't picked it up. The son told him it was "messed up". He said the kid that owned it had a 22RF Savage that looked just like it and put the wrong bullet in it and fired it!!! I had to go by there on the way home so I picked it up and took it to the gun room. YES HE HAD FIRED A 22RF IN A 17HMR!! Bullet made it into the rifling and lodged(DUH!!!) I removed the "former" 22 caliber bullet which had been transformed into a .172", 1/2 inch long, engraved with lands and grooves, piece of metal!!!! Quite interesting!!! On inspection of the chamber and the barrel, I found no earthshattering damage!!! I'm on the road till Thursday PM so won't get to test the firearm until Friday! When I get home I'll post a pic of the "removed" projectile and a normal 22 and a normal 17HMR for your comparison! Quite interesting!! The kid who reported the "maloading" was not present at the firing of said projectile!!! So I don't know the particulars about the "physical" and "probably verbal" happenings at said mishap!!! GHD

Oh geez, this will lead to more Ruger warning labels and PCness..

Theyll have a big warning label in orange on the stock and barrel of the guns, Caliber: 17 hmr , do not shoot other calibers through this rifle.

LTS, I did think it would shoot!!! Rim, bolt face, chamber length, adequate for a little miscue!!! As far as causing damage, I wondered if there would possibly be some damage to extractors or such but none apparent. I would like to know where the clip is for the rifle! It probably wasn't damaged either....the kid probably lost it!!!
And as far as you pabooger........??????????????? GHD
