A weathered old veteran shed a tear to mourn the loss of something dear. Through cloudy eyes he strained to see into the depths of humanity. In search that which caused this loss and mocked his Savior on the Cross. He'd braved the snow with Washington's men and was with the Ninth in the Ardenne. He'd fought at King's Mountain and again at Bull Run in Vietnam's jungles and Iran's scorching sun. He's every mother's son and a brother to all and he's always first to answer the call. His precious country now scarred and torn from foreign zealot's misplaced scorn. The precious lives of his countrymen wasted and lost in the powerful din. But right will prevail and love will survive and unity will keep his America alive. "Oh, My country, strong and free whose shores have welcomed all. I've fought for you in many a war again I hear your call. You've been a Mother, true and strong regardless of our race. You've nurtured us from birth to death and never known disgrace. Your arms have always opened wide to help those in distress and when their needs seemed out of reach you've pulled them to your breast. I know your heart is breaking from this carnage in our land. Needless, wasteful killings And for these we'll take a stand. We've been stung by inhumanity flung on us by worthless ghouls whose jealousy and hatred Know not yet our kindred souls. For the reckoning is coming and your justice will prevail And with God to guide our footsteps our resolve will never fail. Though these old bones be brittle and these eyes can see no more. My mind is sharp, my honor strong I'm eager for the chore. But I've passed the torch to others now They're tested, strong and true. They've heard your call, they've seen your tears on a bed of red and white and blue. Oh, America, America My country tried and true. Wipe back the tears and calm the fears Our God will see us through." *** Larry Dunn September 17, 2001 hope6970 Moderator Posts: 586 (9/17/01 10:32:04 pm) | Del Re: AMERICA, AMERICA. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dreamcatcher, What a lovely poem, it gives so much feeling to the heart. You write with deep emotion which can be felt and read with each word. You are so lucky to possess the gift it takes to write like that. The last paragraph: "Oh, America, America My country tried and true. Wipe back the tears and calm the fears Our God will see us through." Outstanding!! nighthawk V.I.P.
