I picked up a book on 1911 gunsmithing and I am reading stuff about how tight the bushing should be. The author references the bushing to barrel fit but gets a little foggy on the bushing to frame fit. He tells about how some shooters want it tight enough to need the wrench to get it out an others who like it somewhat looser. Mine is a stock Colt bushing and it is not tight in the frame at all and I can easily remove it by hand. This appears this is an accuracy issue. Should I get an oversize bushing and fit it somewhat tighter than my stock one? After all I am teaching myself about how to improve my 1911 on other fronts so I thought this might be an important modification.

The looser a barrel bushing is, the more end float there can be.
Remember....the objective is for the barrel to go back into battery and lock up exactly where it was on the previous shot. |

Ed, Brownell's sells both pre-fit and oversized barrel bushings for 1911's. I'd suggest fitting a bushing for best accuracy.
