Groups of soldiers in blue and gray Others in khaki, and green then say "We're from Bull Run, Yorktown, the Maine" The Newcomer said, "You died not in vain." From a man on sticks one could hear "The only thing we have to fear. The Newcomer said, "We know the rest, trust us sir, we've passed that test." "Courage doesn't hide in caves You can't bury freedom, in a grave," The Newcomers had heard this voice before A distinct Yankees twang from Hyannisport shores A silence fell within the mist Somehow the Newcomer knew that this Meant time had come for her to say What was in the hearts of the five thousand plus that day "Back on Earth, we wrote reports, Watched our children play in sports Worked our gardens, sang our songs Went to church and clipped coupons We smiled, we laughed, we cried, we fought Unlike you, great we're not" The tall man in the stovepipe hat Stood and said, "don't talk like that! Look at your country, look and see You died for freedom, just like me" Then, before them all appeared a scene Of rubbled streets and twisted beams Death, destruction, smoke and dust And people working just 'cause they must Hauling ash, lifting stones, Knee deep in hell But not alone "Look! Blackman, Whiteman, Brownman, Yellowman Side by side helping their fellow man!" So said Martin, as he watched the scene "Even from nightmares, can be born a dream." Down below three firemen raised The colors high into ashen haze The soldiers above had seen it before On Iwo Jima back in '44 The man on sticks studied everything closely Then shared his perceptions on what he saw mostly "I see pain, I see tears, I see sorrow - but I don't see fear." "You left behind husbands and wives Daughters and sons and so many lives are suffering now because of this wrong But look very closely. You're not really gone. All of those people, even those who've never met you All of their lives, they'll never forget you Don't you see what has happened? Don't you see what you've done? You've brought them together, together as one. With that the man in the stovepipe hat said "Take my hand," and from there he led five thousand plus heroes, Newcomers to heaven On this day, two thousand one, nine eleven Author Unknown Winter11 V.I.P. It has always amazed me of those that have written such lovely and poignant poems and the like and at the end you find out...Author Unknown. What a shame, how often we would search out for other writings from that Author. To see more of what they see, to experience more of their world, to be carried away and to share in it. To be fearful or ashamed or to explode with colors and exhaltations as they take us along...forgetting that we are reading words but are experiencing what the Author is experiencing and what he wants for us to experience...to see or be for a little time. Sometimes as I said...it could be any of our frailities, or flaws or the more noble of our traits as honor and duty and sacrifice that we feel for just a little while. Written down...we can always come back. Does any one know why an Author is Unknown? Chief? Catch? Hawk? Mith? Anyone?...or am I being silly and reading too much into it. nighthawk Moderator Posts: 415 (10/12/01 11:17:37 am) | Del Re: A moving poem -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homer,,you are not being silly, I wish I could claim writtings such as this,, alas, I can not I am humbled when I read something so well written and so moving,,this person has a firm grasp on how to put their feelings into words,, a talented person indeed! None had the author's name. A lot of people will forward such items and fail to leave the author's name on it. It gets cut during the process of deleting superfluous information. It's a shame, but it happens. My "I Don't Want to Be a Sailor" was forwarded to me by several individuals who pulled it from various sources with an "Unknown Author" tag applied to it. This is much better than someone taking credit for it by attaching their name to it or by not even having the courtesy to indicate that they don't know the name of the author. The implication is that they wrote it. It's just one of those things that happens when volumes of information is being sent over the net. oneknight Moderator Posts: 2147 (10/12/01 10:40:56 pm) | Del Re: A moving poem -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deeply moving poem!
