Default What our range Neighbors think of us

February 24, 2005
Meeting at Parks and Recreation
6:00pm

County representatives:
Kevin Briski – Director P &R
Kevin White – County Commissioner District 5

ERML:

Neighbors who live near the range:
Fred Johnson & his wife (His place looks like dump)
Johnson’s daughter and her husband
Nine other neighbors

Concerns heard from the neighbors:
• Rapid Fire
• 4 wheelers destroying the road by doing “doughnuts” on their road.
• High number of cars destroying the road
• Trash around the range and on the road
• Excessive noise from shooting, Mostly on Sundays
• No sheriffs patrol, not enough patrolling (BS)
• Members not obeying the range rules
• Shooting in other directions beside the north berm
• One neighbor says he was on the road (west side of range) when a shotgun blast and pellets went just over his truck. He went back to the range and a member was shooting a shotgun west and not to the north at the back berm.
• Shooting over the north berm
• Ricochets going over the north berm and killing the trees not on the range property (Iven ook most of them)
• Shooting after and before hours
• No respect from members to neighbors
• Someone shooting tracers set the woods on fire 6 or 7 months ago
• Lead concerns – Some (Johnson’s) have had their wells tested.
• The range was given permission to move in with the understanding that it was black powder only club with only a few members, not open for all types of shooting and many members.
• Dog was shot and killed close to Johnson’s house
• Neighbors fear for their safety
• ERML has $120,000 and 1000 members
o Information come from Gateswood and “the outlet on Fairfield”

What they want done:
Get rid of the range. Do not want it in their neighborhood.
They do not want to compromise
They do not want county to renew/rewrite our lease
They want the range GONE.

Actions they say they will take:
Petition County Commissioners to shut the range down. May force a vote on it.
Sue the county
Sue ERML
Sue Jimmy Barnett

Other things I heard the neighbors say:
G. W. Thompson was the only person living in the area before the range. All others moved in after the range was there.

Want a full time range officer(s) to make members obey the rules.

Feel that with two or more County Commissioners as club member they will not get a fair vote to shut down the range.

One of the neighbors cat was run over by someone going to the range. The person didn’t stop.

One neighbor says his family once owned all the land the range sits on. That the county “took it” and his family is looking at taking it back from the county.

They will be writing and calling all the commissioners about getting the range shut down.

After meeting I talked with both Kevins:

They had this meeting with the neighbors to come to some “compromises” between the range and the neighbors. Both Kevins were surprised to hear how angry the neighbors were and that they didn’t want any compromise, they want the range to be gone from their neighborhood and nothing else.

Watch for the neighbors to put this on the agenda at a commissioners meeting.

(It is)

This is happening with more and more ranges. They move in AFTER the range is in place, then complain about it, and want it shut down. Same thing happens with airports.
DUH…you didn’t think there was any noise by an airport/range?

We are having the same kind of trouble with one of our ranges.
How do you fight, out and out LIARS???

So are any of those complaints justified? Such as setting the woods on fire, shooting in the wrong direction and so forth?

'Cause that would make me complain too.

Well lets see now. Anti-gun people are always very truthful.
With their agenda of closing the range why would they come up with a laundry list like that.

No, but neither are they always liars. Some of those complaints are reasonable ones, and I have no basis to judge them true or false based on your first post.

BCannell

We are not choosing up sides here.
I know every one on this board is 100% progun.
But your posts make me wonder who's side you might be on.

This is not a question of pro-gun and anti-gun.

It's a simple question. Is the range unsafe?

Many posts and threads, all with great detail about the range, over the last several months have appeared in the forum. A thorough search would reveal these items.

It is very well supervised and is not in any way dangerous to the public. It has a very knowledgable and dedicated Range Master, who is uncompromising, tough and an active member of this forum (358winchester).

Give me a break, neighbors getting their wells tested due to lead concerns from the range. This says it all.

Wheather or not the neighbors complaints are justified or logical no matter how much you attempt to accommodate or comprimise they are always back to take more until there is no range. After this crusade is won by the concerned neighbors they will be after someone else in the community, perhaps somebody whose house paint color is offensive to them.

The Fun Police Are Everywhere.

Best thing to do is catagorically address their concerns and invite them or representitives to a day at the range to see first hand. Guarantee you they will not be interested in seeing the other side, but atleast try.

Good luck.

thanks Marlin but right now I would rather be pulling rotten teeth from a gorilla without Novocaine

My ears hurt from phone calls, my fingers hurt from typing and my mind is gone to that "special place"
But they haven't put me under the dirt pile so I will continue to do the best I can for our range. heck they can't eat me alive, I would give them gas

Y'all go do some shooting and relax

Not exclusively a shooter's problem, dragstrips are being shut down in the whole country for some similar complaints, mostly noise. And almost all of them were there long before the neighbors. But I guess that some manners for the range users would help a lot. I and the rest of the local shooters uses 2 ranges here, one belongs to the shooting club, the other belongs to the army. At ours, all care is taken to avoid hassles and accidents, and in the orther, well, guess no comments are required! ;-))

Life is not always fair.
Camp Bullis, in Texas, was closed a few years ago, to civilian, 'High Power' shooters, because of a fire in a dumpster, that resulted in a bunch of rounds going off, as it went down the road.
Having been on both side of the issue, I know hard and aggravating it is to 'return' unused ammo, in the military, and how 'cheap' most of us civilians are, when it comes to ammo; there is no doubt, in my tiny little mind, as to who domped that .308 fodder, into the dumpster.
Don't matter; the man did what he did, and we can't shoot there, anymore.
Good news is I have a place, where I can shoot, to 600, with nobody to lock me out, as it's paid for.
Suggest a similar approach, for all who would shoot.

Most people who want a range closed will come up with anything to help there cause. Having a full time range officer is not a bad idea but as to making you move screw them you was there first. I remember a range near me that folks ( Well one guy) wanted closed. The guy raised hogs and he said that a bunch had died because of ingesting lead strange part is this joker lived on the non range side and was 2 miles down the road. He got a few city officals on his side and they had to close the range. Good luck in your fight I hope you win.

Because he didn't have all the facts, BCannell was wondering if their wasn't more to the story. I think it's unfair to say someone is choosing sides when they are merely trying to understand the situation. It became clearer as this thread moved along that this is a responsible shooting range...early on, I wasn't sure either. You can still be pro-gun and objective at the same time. To just rush to a defense the minute you hear gun is akin to Jesse Jackson rushing to defend what appears to be police brutality..without considering the entire story. end rant.
