Took 4 1911s out today and ran 200 rounds thru them. I swear I am getting old. I wear out fast anymore. Of course, the humidity is like 85% and its 95 degrees outside so that may have something to do with it. But, I took my stainless sig and stainless smith and my rock island and my desert eagle commander out. Cant wait to get my hands on the new sig scorpion....Will be glad to see a little cooler weather for some longer range sessions.

You know, the more I shoot my rock island, the more impressed I am. I am really surprised at the fit and finish and especially the function of the 2011 tactical. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. Not saying I dont love my smiths, colts, sigs and others, just that for the price I dont think the rock island can be beat. I know the spartan is suppose to be a great gun for the money too. I will find that out one day soon. If I didnt have the money for anything else I wouldnt hesitate to buy rock island. As always, nice collection limbkiller.

Well, I got the scorpion commander today and tore it down and cleaned it and oiled it with silver bullet like I always do before taking them out to put them thru their paces. I really like the cera cote on this gun and the grips and main spring that form a mag well extention for fast reloads. I normally have to add a mag well. It also comes with low profile sig lite night sights. It started to storm just as I went to go out and shoot it so I will have to wait a while, but I like the way she feels.

Took the scorpion out today and ran 150 rounds thru it. I had 2 failures to go fully into battery and one of the stock magazines wont lock the slide back after its empty. I was shooting reloads, so, I examined the cases on both failures and found nicks on the case rims which I believe contributed to the failures. As for the magazine, I just replaced it with a wilson combat and problem solved. The gun shot accurately and is easy to hang onto. I will need to find a good leather holster for a commander with a rail, this is my only commander I have with a rail so any suggestions are welcome.

I'm not much help in the leather holster department as far as different brands, I make most of my own; I tried a full size with a rail in my standard 1911 home-made IWB holster and it did drag on the rail itself after being molded to a standard dust hood, wouldn't work well if at all I don't think. maybe soak the leather for a bit and try 'remolding' it to accomodate the rail? Most people seem to vote that it usually doesnt work on good tight fitting ones, but some of the more 'universal' ones are forgiving enough. Bladetech and others have some kydex IWB stuff for SA operators, I would bet if you called them they could do a commander size with a rail. They're local here, and one of my favorite holster companies.

You could do the 1911 loop style holster, I would imagine that would work but I've never liked them personally; rather have a full holster and with retention if possible.

I dont do retention and I dont do IWB either, but the guy I have make my belts can probably make me a holster. None of the galcos or any others I have will work without really stretching them out and even then I am not real sure of the end result. There are a couple of paddle holsters made for the gun that may work but I prefer a leather galco or similar for everyday carry. Heck, untill I put 5-600 flawless rounds thru this gun, I wont carry it anyhow. I gotta make certain its perfect first. Its going to take some doing to kick my s&w e-series commander out of its place.

DD,

Try these guys, they make some nice stuff. Spend some time browsing, they have lots of choices. http://www.epsaddlery.com/c-20-strongside.aspx

Well I followed my advice and browsed, looked at new products and ended up lusting after exotics (just a little spendy).

Yea, none of them list a holster for a commander with a rail.

Now, I know my 1911 isn't a super special piece - it's made by Citadel in the Philippines (which is an Armscor company like Rock Island is). I love my 1911. I have yet to find a replacement standard 1911 part that doesn't fit and I've done a few minor modifications. I do have to admit I really like the 8 round mags.

The 1911 has a special meaning to me. I was 17 years old when I joined the US Navy. I was one of the 'wonder' Petty Officers - automatic E4 out of A-School because I was a wiz in technology. Being a Petty Officer meant I had to stand quarterdeck watch on the ship as Petty Officer of the Watch with a 1911. On my little destroyer escort we had regular practice with the 1911 when at sea.

I have never been able to afford one one of the high priced Colts and when I had a chance to trade for this straight across for my SKS rifle last year I jumped on it. I received the original box, lock, manual and 25 rounds of ammo in the bargain. The pistol had only around 400 rounds through it. Performs flawlessly (I've put another 100 rounds through it).

So, here's the pic of my 1911.

Thanks. It has a small problem I thought I fixed with wilson mags but I didnt. It doesnt lock back when empty about 90% of the time so it has to be an out of spec slide latch. I am calling sig tommorow to see if they will send me a new one without sending them the gun. I did take it out and run a bunch of different ammo thru it and it will eat ANYTHING. The battery issues were caused by two case rims that were dented while being reloaded. I am confident it will not have any more issues as long as I get the lock back problem solved. This gun just came off the production line on aug 1st. I will keep you posted on what sig tells me.
WHSMITH, nothing wrong with your citidel, I have one too. Its a good shooter, dont think any less of it because its a Filipino....

Spoke with sig this morning and they are sending me another slide latch although they arent convinced thats the problem. We will see. I told them that was alot easier than sending the gun back...we will soon find out. Meanwhile, my rock island goes on and on without skipping a beat, eating any ammo I feed it. I have tried to limp wrist it and make it not feed but it refuses to have a hickup....go figure....those darn cheap Philippine guns anyhow....

Man, I drive 35 miles through the country to the range, shoot 100 rounds, and drive home. I'm totally exhausted. Born in 1942.

I hear ya, I shoot in my back yard. I normally shoot about 2-300 per outing and sometimes more but I seem to be tiring faster. It stinks to get old...I think I need a recliner out there! Thats it! A recliner on the range! You got me by 15yrs...

So an update just in case anyone might give a rats butt...I spoke to sigs customer service like I reported and told them of my issue of the slide not wanting to lock back about 90% of the time. They werent sold on the idea that it was an out of spec slide latch, but agreed to send me one to try before sending the gun for repair. Well, 10 days later, fed ex shows up with a new slide latch and I got my calipers out and measured both of them and the new one was just a very slight bit larger. I swapped it out and went out to try it out. I ran 100 rounds thru it with 3 sig factory mags and 2 wilson combat mags and it never failed to lock back once. So, I have run about 400 flawless rounds thru it since having the failure to go into battery issue which was caused by 2 bad reloaded cases and now the lock problem is fixed. It makes some ragged holes at 35 ft. I think I like it.

Got my frame back from Doug Turnbull yesterday and finished putting my birthday present from my wife together last night. It turned out so nice I had to share it with you. This is my first "Custom Build" and the final results are better than I could have dreamed. I am still a working stiff so it will be the weekend before I can post a range report. By the way, the grips are by our friend "Woodnut".

For anyone interested here is an update. It appears that I put things together in their proper order. I took my new treasure to the range and fired 10 rounds at the 7 yard line to get a grouping (11:00 high just outside center). Moved to the 25 yard line and commenced to shoot 150 rounds of various loads without a hich-up. No FTF or FTF, this is one sweet pistol to shoot. Even though this is a full size pistol, it feels good on my hip. I have an IWB holster from Tucker Leather that works great. I spent a lot of time involved with IPSC shooting, letting others do the gunsmithing for me, this one is mine and it makes me proud.
