I would really appreciate info on this old gun.It is a J.STEVENS 22 bolt action.shoots 22 longs,shorts and longrifle.It is a springfield model 82.It has a 21"barrel.It is marked chicopee fall,mass usa.there is a number 14 stamped on the left side or the barrel where it meets the reciever.If possible id like to know how old it is,what year it was made,and value if possible.can someone help.thanks hunthigh.

"J. Stevens Arms Company was founded in 1864 at Chicopee Falls, MA as J. Stevens & Co. In 1886 the company name was changed to J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. In 1916, the company name was changed to New England Westinghouse. New England Westinghouse manufactured both Browning machine guns and Moisin-Nagant (Russian Military) Rifles. In 1920, New England Westinghouse was sold to the Savage Arms Corp., who manufactured firearms marked "J. Stevens Arms Co.". Savage dropped the "J. Stevens Arms Co." designation in the late 1940s, and used only the name "Stevens" was up to 1990. In 1990, Savage discontinued manufacture of all firearms bearing the Stevens trademark.

The Stevens Model 82 Sporting rifle was manufactured from 1935 to 1939, and would fire 22 Short, 22 Long and 22 Long Rifle cartridges. The Model 82 was not serial numbered, it was a simple single shot take-down design with a plain hardwood pistol grip half-stock that had a long finger groove in the forend, 22 inch barrel and weighed about 4 pounds. The rear sight was a spring-leaf and elevator type and was used in conjunction with a gold bead front site. Values for these rifles is not high."

Not being serial numbered, there's no way of telling in what year the rifle was made.

BTW, "Springfield" was an inexpensive line of rifles made by Stevens and has nothing to do with the U.S. Armory at Springfield or with the current Springfield Armory company.

I have this gun exactly as you describe. It was my first firearm, given to me by my grandmother; it belonged to my grandfather. I have just gotten it out of the safe and am working it over, trying to see if it will shoot a good group at 100-yd.
