Buddy of mine was gifted with a Remington Model 17. Serial number is 62483.
He says it appears to have some dings in the stock, and plenty of the bluing worn off from case wear and truck wear. No vent rib. He personally rates it as "fair" condition. I've already told him that from his description, the 2005 Standard Catalog of Firearms prices it at roughly $175. It does have an inscription: "Lord, let me shoot clean, hit clean and kill clean. If I can't kill clean, then let me miss clean." It was his wife's grandfather's gun. It was presented to him after just a few weeks after his firstborn son arrived. We know the approximate worth (priceless, as it's a family heirloom) but are wondering about when it was manufactured. All I have is "manufactured by Remington between 1917 and 1933" and that Ithaca took over the design and manufactured it as the Model 37 until they recently closed their doors.

John, there were about 48,000 made in those years of production. The serial # should have a suffix letter, A-F with F being the highest grade. I have the years of manufacture for the Ithaca's, but not the Remingtons. Go to www.remington.com and search the site. They have a FAQ section there and you can email them your inquiry, they take about 3 working days to get back to you.
