"Edge of Darkness" with Errol Flynn, Ann Sheridan, Walter Houston.
I like it because this movie shows how very very important having guns in the hands of civilians (the people) is to overcome tyranny. . |

Lee Savage was the gunsmith in Waukegan, Illinois in the 1950's. We was drafted at age 28 and drove a tank destroyer in Africa and Italy. He told me that there was one war movie which was completely real and showed the war he experienced: A Walk in the Sun. Dana Andrews starred, I believe.

I didn't see one of my favorites listed. For the flyboys "The Bridges at Toko Ri"
Also like "To Hell and Back", "The Longest Day" (first movie I ever saw in a theatre) and of course the Duke in "The Green Berets".

Dang, I forgot 'Breaker Morant' - not only a favorite war movie, but a favorite movie overall. Made in Australia, 1980, regarding the Boer War. A must see, if you haven't...

Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and I thought Enemy at the Gates was really good. Heartbreak Ridge was pretty good too. (The one with Clint Eastwood, cuz I thought there was an older one by the same name).

I accept with information: Like I said before the action scenes were great but:
1. Why leave your sniper and observer in the tower after the action gets going? A fundamental rule of action is don't stay in one place to long. 2. If you are trying to stop the tanks why fight on the far side of the river? When the enemy shows up blow it up and make your stand with it to your front and not your rear. |

A GREAT movie I saw about Korea ONCE on TV and can never find it anywhere and don't even remember the name...the one about a bookworm second LT who actually is the battalion "Unit Historian" that tags along on a patrol led by a hard bitten NCO just BEFORE the Chicoms come in, the patrol get's caught behind the lines surrounded by the Chinese offensive, the NCO is blinded and the LT leads them back using tactics from old wars that he has read about...if anybody remembers it let me know I would like to have a copy!
Then "What did You do in the War, Daddy" Took place in Italy in WWII, where a "tired" US unit is up against an Italian unit in a town that is ready to surrender right before Italy changes sides, so they fake fighting during the day for weeks so the American brass think they are still fighting and the Germans who are watching think the Italians are still fighting, but at night they party together...until the Germans come in after the Italian surrender to take over then the Italians and Americans join up and do a great job actually fighting and beating the German SS unit sent to take over the town...GREAT movie, that again I cannot find a copy of.... ![]()

I thought about all I have seen and the few I think really stand out are:
A Midnight Clear (Battle of the Bulge) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Midnight_Clear The Eye of the Needle (Espionage in Britian) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_of_the_Needle Das Boot (German submarine) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot Zulu (Brits fighting the natives) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zulu_(film)) Saving Private Ryan 12 o'clock High (WWII Bombers) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_O%27Clock_High Last edited by DGG!; 03-08-2011 at 01:24 PM.. |

There have been a great many good movies listed here, and I would never try to separate out the very best, but I very much liked "The Enemy Below" mostly because it developed the sense of the crew's apprehension of the new Captain's abilities and they way they came to respect him. Combat on ships differs from infantry in that the crew is totally dependent on their Captain's skill and judgement (and luck), Kurt Jurgens was also very good, actually the crews of both vessels were played very realistically.
But what if he doesn't turn left? We will survive until he does I saw Das Boot after reading Herbert Werner's book "Iron Coffins" and frankly I thought it was silly and childish, very unrealistic. Last edited by Old Steve; 03-27-2011 at 04:00 AM.. |
