Used to be a replacement lower plate for the SKS that switched it to Ak type mags. I'll see if I can run them down again; then you just need to find an AK drum. If I tweeked anyone else's memory that might recall the company selling that part, then "wahoo". Otherwise, I'll try to get my low geared brain up and running.

They turn up at Gaybroker once in awhile but usually are selling for north of $175. I have a few SKS-M's and they use the AK drums which are much easier to find. With this situation you are either stuck buying a common, inexpensive rifle and a uncommon, expensive drum; or buying an uncommon, expensive rifle and a common, inexpensive drum

I'm not sure what you're talking about. The SKS receiver has to be milled out to accept AK mags. It's not wide enough. The stock has to be inletted too, and the bolt has to be shaved down. There isn't a drop-in adapter plate that can do all of that.

It's been a long time since I've seen an SKS specific drum mag (with the "duckbill" style tab on it).

Thanx 1952SNIPER. Someone told me about all the millin and all that. I knew the bolt in plate was to good to be true. I guess I'll just stick to the fifty round clip their just so dang long and in the way.

I should add, just for posterity, that DC Engineering used to (and may still) make an adapter that allows the SKS to use mags similar to AK mags. But you had to buy the special mags from DC Engineering. This would make it function more like an AK without all the mill work. But again, these were not AK mags, and you couldn't just use any AK mag in the SKS. It had to be one of the DC Engineering ones. And if you're familiar with DC Engineering, their products are well known for being outrageously priced (with outrageous claims to go along with it).

What's wrong with just the standard fixed 10-round magazine, loading it with stripper clips as intended? That's just as fast (if not faster) than swapping out a duckbill mag. And it doesn't look as goofy.

It was likely DC's crap that I was seeing advertized. I know how Soviet systems work and malfunction; but beyond that I have as much use for them as anti-gun legislation. That machining really isn't that big of a problem though. If you want to do it; you'll get her done.

If you really want to just tear up targets; switch over to belt fed.

Sell what you have unmodified, Then look for a Norinco SKS Model "D"
This model was made to accept all AK mags and drums. Since the ban has died they are once again cheaper than while the ban was in effect. The ones you will find are mostly old new stock, because most people held or bought them to hose people down in the pricing, during the ban.
