H&R used the letter codes As in 1978. this would make this a third model. the sportsman double action model 999 was in production between 1932 and 1986.

MODEL 999 SPORTSMAN THIRD MODEL (TRANSFER BAR IGNITION)---1973-1986
Top Break, Double Action, 22 Long Rifle Caliber, 9 shot, Blue Finish, Barrel Length 4 & 6 inches (4 inch not added until 1979, Adjustable Sights. In 1979 Only the Model name was advertised as Model 999 Automatic-Ejecting and it was offered in that year only in 32 S&W Long caliber, 6 shot.
VALUE: NIB:=$425, 95%=$350, 60%=$175

I just picked up this pistol from the gun shop, but I believe it is a 1933 model. The SN is: D5344. It has a one piece checkered handle/grip and a non-hammer mounted firing pin. I feel I got an okay deal as it was a little over $200 and it is in 90% shape or better. I cannot wait to get out and see what she will do at the range. Thanks in advance Bill.

the serial number is an early one and early 1933 or late 1932 would be as good as any guess on manufacture date. the model 999 and model 199 were introduced in fall of 1932.

I would say that is after May 1933 as it has front and back adjustable sites and a non-ribbed barrel. Any clue to the value of this Pistol? 250-350? Thanks

flanker08,
From what I'm seeing in the market place - the older Sportsman pieces are not generating as much interest as the newer ones. Typically, these earlier pieces are selling in the $300 +/- $50 range. I recently purchased one with s/n 609 for $285, it is in "GOOD" condition with some finish loss.

I have my Dad's H&R Sportsman Double Action; 22 Long rifle
The serial number is D28242. It is a 9 shot top break
The bluing is 100%, the grip is Walnut.
My question is how much is it worth and is it a good revolver? I do not know much about guns and am just learning pistol craft. Can I use this gun or should I just put it away and keep it as a memento?
Any information would be appreciated.

I have just received an H&R Sportsman 22LR and hoped to get a little more info on it. I don't plan on selling it, just clean it up and maybe teach my son to shoot with it.
I've noticed most serials posted here are a number or so longer than what I'm finding on my handle... B9938 is what is stamped on mine...

Any info you could provide me with would be cool, and thanks in advance.

H&R used the "B" letter code in 1941. value posted above. after 1940 the number on the H&R gun did not matter only the one or two letter codes were needed to tell year of manufacture.

Yes. Frame mounted firing pin, adjustable sights, one piece grip. So the early ones aren't worth as much money? Just inherited this piece, and trying to find an amount to insure it for.
Thanks for any input.

noobie -
Insure it for $500. Consider $400 as value in EXCELLENT condition, sales tax, S&H, NICS/Dealer fees - comes out pretty close to that to replace it. Don't know how your insurance co. considers firearms - are you planning to add a rider to your policy?

My State Farm policy only covers up to $2500 in losses of firearms but doesn't require listing. Check with your agent to see how much they cover. Good luck.

AC = 1966
Value all depends on condition.
Maybe around $ 350 + NIB, and down from there.

To me, it looks almost perfect, all blued except for the hammer, low wobble on the cylinder, and after a through cleaning, it should look brand new.

Hello!
Can anyone tell me how many different configurations of .22 cylinders were made during the life-span of the model 999, and if possible when each change was made? Bill, I sure miss you!
Thank you!

Old Gun Guy,
Answering your question will take some hands on research - Bill doesn't have this info in his research and I will need to examine my examples to see differences. This will take some time to accomplish - too many other loose ends right now. If I don't respond within a few days - bounce this back up to the top to remind me.
