I need some input, guys and gals, and this is the best place on planet Earth to get good input on anything to do with guns.
Alas, I have been attacked once again by the dreaded and recurring "Mauser virus," a most virulent and incurable illness indeed. I think it was likely the circular I received today from SOG that caused its resurgence. Anyway, SOG has some Turkish Mausers for sale right now, priced at $60.00, which seems like a darn good price for a Mauser. They're small rings, of course, and allegedly in "good to very good" condition. Has anyone had experience with the Turkish Mausers? If I gambled with one (so I could "gambol" with it, so to speak ) would I likely get a rifle worth the time and trouble to refinish and shoot, or just a broken down old POS useful only as a tent peg? SOG also has some German-built, large ring 98s for sale that are supposed to be in very good condition but have the straight bolt instead of the turned bolt of the 98k battle rifles of WWII. According to the add, these were used by rear eschelon troops and capured after the war. They want $140 for one of them, which is not bad if the rifles are in decent condition. I do love my Mausers even though I've been working mostly with Mosins recently. I do need my Mauser fix from time to time, just to remain in good health. Any input would be appreciated.

I don't have any experience with them but I got a question for you. Sounds like you ordered from them before. Are they decent quality for exp. If they say good to very good are the usually good to very good?

Uh, as you know, a Mauser guy I AIN'T..but are you SURE the Turks are "small ring?" I thought I heard MANY guys converting them when they were $27.95 WITH bayonet not long ago, maybe 5 years(?)....and I thought for SURE a selling point I read many times was "Large Ring Mauser COMPLETE for less than an ACTION alone." (I STILL kick myself for not "stooping" to buy one then, even considered it when they started escalating SLOWLY to $29.95, then $32.95, then $35...before they finally "dried up.")
There were a lot of crufflers on here who were doing a BRISK business in the Turks back then, and I'm sure a lot converted theirs, they seemed pretty happy with them, although the EARLY ones that were coincidentally the CHEAPEST were supposedly the best available, and condition supposedly went down quickly as the price went up....

Since I know almost nothing about Turkish Mausers (or anything else Turkish, except for their coffee, which will rot your innards), the small ring thing didn't stand out to me. Hmmm, come to think about it, I was looking at a Swedish Mauser earlier today somewhere online. I think those are, in fact, small ringers.

If I remember correctly the 93 Turk Mausers are small ring. The 1903 and 1938 models are large ring.
This site might help you with the Turk Mauser info. http://www.turkmauser.com/ I only have one Turk Mauser. It's an all matching 1903 (converted to 7.92X56 in 1936) that I got from Big 5 Sporting Goods for $100. The stock is in great shape with tiger striping. Most of the blue is gone, but the bore is in great shape and it shoots well with 50s Yugo and Romanian. It didn't do as well with the 40s Turkish ammo, tho. Marlin |

Thanks for that info, Armed! I knew what the difference was, but not the details and history behind that difference. It is most interesting to know. Were I a punster (which, of course, I'm not), I might say that article is a real <ahem> "ringer."
