Default 1858 Conversion? Help?

I'm interested in converting my 1858 new model army (peitta) to cartridge. I would like the ability to quickly switch from black powder to cartridge and back again. I have noticed that there are a couple on the market (taylor and Co., Krist, R&D) I was just wondering which one would be the best for my money. I noticed some are six shot, others 5. Just wondering what the best would be....can you ya'll help?

Sorry bigboy, I cannot help you in your quest, however my latest flier from Midway shows that they are having a sale on the conversion you are asking about. If its of any consequence, the cylinder so far has a 4 1/2 star customer review rating.

I've heard about those, how do they work? Do you have to use only BP Long Colt rounds or can you use factory? Wouldn't the pressures for factory be too much, or does the cylinder handle it all?

And I wonder if they make one for my Traditions 1860 Army....

Hey Polish, they are made for BP cartridges, or mild factory ammo. Here is what Midway says:

Quote:
Material:
# 4150 Steel Cylinder
# 4140 Steel Top Plate

Finish: Blued

Gunsmithing Required: No

Notes:
# For use in Ruger Old Army revolvers in .45 caliber only.
# Suitable for use with "Cowboy Ammunition" only (750-850 fps).
# For use with blackpowder cartridges with a maximum loading of 34 grains of FPG blackpowder or blackpowder equivalent.

Basic Instructions:
The conversion cylinder has a plate at the rear of the cylinder body that contains the firing pins. The plate is removed by lifting it off the cylinder body. There is an indexing pin in the body so that the firing pins align properly with the chambers in the cylinder. Removing the plate allows access to the chambers in the cylinder body. Load the chambers with the specified caliber of ammunition. Replace the plate. Remove the original cylinder from the blackpowder handgun and replace that cylinder with the conversion cylinder. After firing. the conversion cylinder must be removed and the plate lifted off so that the empty brass can be removed with a rod or other suitable object (not included with the cylinder).
