I, like the majority of the TFF members I would think, grew up around guns, family who were big time shooters and hunters, etc. I shot on an NRA rifle team back in the day at our National Guard Armory, where I learned gun safety, and how to shoot.
Having said that, I feel first-timer CHL classes shouldn't be shortened as per the most recent TX law has --I do favor reduced hours for CHL renewals. I've been to gun shows where it's obvious people are buying their first gun and have no clue about how are they operated or safety --especially Orientals. I mention them because most of them are not from a gun culture and have no clue. I work with several and know this to be true --they admit it. My fear is those who fall into first time gun owners with a CHL are the ones who are more likely to err in judgment and give anti-gunners more ammunition, no pun intended. They should take the 2 day course like the rest of us had to. IMHO, of course.

Steve, I agree with you on this. Everyone that carries a gun, or owns a gun, should take at least one course in gun safety, and at least one course on how, and when, to use a gun for defensive pourposes. A concealed carry course will teach you these needed tools, even if you don't want to carry concealed. I also think that it is the responsibility of every person that choses to carry a gun to get some training on a firearms course for SD. Both day, and night time training. As the laws change they should stay informed by taking a course every few years. If I may play the devil's advocate for a moment though, I would like to point out that I don't think it should be mandatory. Nor do I believe that the state has the right under the constitution, and bill of rights, to make you pay a fee to carry a gun, concealed, or otherwise. If you choose to ignore the getting well trained part, well then, I guess you get what you deserve.

Every law outside of the second amendment is illegal. Requiring someone to have a permit is illegal. Requiring them to receive training is illegal. Its a shame where we have ended up.

i like the fact we take a handgun safety / law course to get CHL.
I would not support any move for a renewal class or any kind of CEU type things. too much junk like that and hoops to go thru already with other licenses. get it and stay informed. if you keep your renewals up.. you are meeting the prior need for handgun exp / safety. it's not like you are gonna wake up a year after taking the safety course and FORGET all the stuff. we need less govt. not more govt.... ( yes we need govt.. but just enough.. not too much ) |

EVERYBODY that carries a firearm, should be properly trained. They should seek out training and continue to train on a constant basis. But no government has the right to force training on anyone. The right to keep and bear arms, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. It is a God given right to keep and bear arms and any laws imposed are infringements on the 2nd amendment. Sorry if some dont agree. Its not me you dont agree with, the 2nd amendment spells it out clearly. I didnt write it, I just agree with it.
