Hey Guys, I'm new here myself, and am greatly looking forward to reading, learning, and hopefully contributing.
I usually carry a Kimber Ultra Tactical II, loaded with 230Gr Speer Gold Dot .45 "short barrel" JHP's In the winter when I'm more heavily clothed, I carry my Springfield Operator, with Winchester Ranger 230GR SXT JHP's

My KelTec P3AT was bought to be a summer carry, but is now my nearly-always gun. It is stuffed with the DoubleTap 90g Gold Dots at an honest 1000fps out of the stubby little barrel.
Recoil with this round is the stoutest of any .380 ammo I have ever fired, so I added the finger extension mag floor plate to all my magazines. With the extension, I have the rapid fire controllability with the DoubleTaps that I had with the rather wimpy WWB FMJs. Accuracy is great, and it is 100% reliable. I carry mine with the belt clip. The mag extension actually helps with a speedy draw, and does not decrease how easily it conceals. Please bear in mind that I live in an extremely low crime area, rarely am out at night, and do not go to any 'bad' places (actually, we don't have any close to us). When I am forced to travel or go to the big city, I bring a 45ACP also.

I carry only 1 gun. Smith and Wesson 1911 summer winter and whenever. I use Fed. Hydra shok 230 grain +p Hp's 1 in chamber 8 round wilson combat mag and I carry a 10 round wilson Com. spare.
I will carry this until I can find a way to conceal an ar-15. (anything is possible) I don't trust anything less than a .45. where I work, a crack head is more deadly than a grizzly bear. If you don't kill it, it's really pi$$ed off. |

Yes, the subject's rehashed and redone, but that's 'cause it's still intriguing. I've carried a 9mm star firestar since the early 90's when I started carrying as a cab driver. I have slender hands so it fits my grip nicely, just as the pachmayr gripper finger grooves and others like them don't. I picked the 9 because the 40 at that time was still too new and at the time it was about the smallest gun in a serious caliber. I've always liked how that little, all-steel gun tames the recoil to let me shoot it nicely, but I wish I could work in more time to practice (age old lament). The backup I carry in my vehicle is a 2" k-frame round-butt with pachmayr non-finger-grooved rubber grips. Carry ammo on my primary is cor-bon in the chamber and the first three in the magazine followed by four 147gr hydrashoks, on the premise that the high energy cor-bon should have the best effectiveness, but I can follow with a more penetrative round if necessary. Two extra magazines are loaded the same way. For the Smith snubby the cylinder has glasers and the two speedloaders have winchester silvertips.
I seem to be in the slight minority with posters who carry the same arm year 'round, but I figured if I stick with one I can get to know it better. I rarely am carrying other than the firestar. I will sometimes carry less while I'm in my home in reach of my house guns. My little break-top 32s&w by h&r arms with 2" factory barrel tucks in a pocket so nicely that I'll pick it even though I haven't found better fodder than round nose lead, and it still seems to have a bit more authority than my NAA black widow. The 22magnum black widow is still the only gun I've found suitable in a swimsuit though. |

1. Taurus PT 111 Millenium, with handloaded Hornady 115gr XTP
2. Berretta mod 71 .22Lr, with 32 gr CCI Stingers. 3. Astra Firecat .25ACP, PMP 50gr. FMJ (Only when I have to go through security checks) and when I go fishing at Monwabisi beach, because I dont care if it rusts. I have tested this tiny little gun and I am convinced that if you shoot someone in the eye, it will penetrate his brain. But I realise it's almost a useless gun/calibre. I wish it was in 32 acp!

I have gone over to the dark side (GLOCK), got a 23 and a 27. Just have to have a reliable handgun for carry and the GLOCK's do it.

I carry a Glock 30 loaded with either Silver tips or Hydra Shoks, When concealment has to be deep I carry a Kel-Tec 380 loaded with Silver Tips or Hydra Shoks. 95% of the time I carry the Glock.

Fro 27 years I carried a lightweight commander wiht 200 gr Federal HPs and only had to use it once.
I am now older and a little recoils sensitive and have gone to my P7-M13 with 147 gr Fed HPs. I find it very interesting to still read so much argument and disagreement on types and sizes of bullets. When it is so apparent that caliber and bullet size are of little consequence if you don't hit what you shoot at. I honestly believe and based upon training people as well as selling firearms for almost 32 years we do a horrible injustice to self defense and the choice (wise and proper) of a self defense firearm based upon the bigger the better attitude. It is true, I would want the biggest baddest gun available if ever again I have to use one to defend hearth and home. But having said that, what do I help others as well as myself in choosing the one gun (remember they have already chosen to buy a gun) best suited for me. my situation and my abilities now and with considerable practice. When people come to me for basic instruction I have them shoot 22 in pistol or revolver for their first experience. I NEVER allow someone to shoot the magnums for their first shots even when that is what they bring to class or private lesson. I have several backup guns and I let them use one of mine to make it both a pleasant and accurate leaning experience. In fact I recommend they do not pick any of the larger calibers until they have a lot of rounds down range. Come on now, most of you are hunters or have seen first hand what bullets do and I don't mean just the hi power bullets. Look at what a CCI Velociter bullet will do to a prairie dog and won't they penetrate most vests? Why then when it is so inherently accurate do we ot recommend the venerable and inherently accurate 22 more often if not for all civilian self defense. WE ARE NOT COPS |

Come on now, most of you are hunters or have seen first hand what bullets do and I don't mean just the hi power bullets. Look at what a CCI Velociter bullet will do to a prairie dog and won't they penetrate most vests? Why then when it is so inherently accurate do we not recommend the venerable and inherently accurate 22 more often if not for all civilian self defense. WE ARE NOT COPS, get over it. We will never have to shoot through anything heavier than a heavy jacket and in most cases we shoot through a t shirt. You can look up the gunfights and see for yoursleves. I carry now a P7-M13 after carrying and shooting a lightweight commander for nearly 30 years, same gun. But I shoot a lot every week, a lot. I changed the barrel at 90,000 rounds and had to put in a ramped barrel as the feed ramp was also worn so that it would not feed reliably. It had almost 47,000 rounds through the new barrel when I changed and began carrying the P7. I have almost 20,000 rounds through the P7 before I put it on to be sure I was competent with it and familiar enough that I do not have to think to put it in action. But most people do not shoot one tenth of that number in any one gun in an entire lifetime and we should keep that foremost in our minds when others come to us for "experienced opinions" on "which gun is best for me". I try to get this kind of info from every student or person who comes into my range in helping them decide for themselves. Everything including their physical make-up as well as their surroundings and then of course how much they will actually practice and whether or not they are going to participate in professional training. Accuracy is absolutely the most important, final, decision making factor for me as it is beyond doubt the one thing that will make the final outcome in the fight fall in your favor. You will not stop it or possibly even scare it enough to make it go away if you cannot hit it when called for to shoot at it in the first place. Then and only then would I recommend going to a larger caliber and then only to the extent they can handle accurately the gun they choose, then as big as they can accuratley handle. I do the same for myself as I do for others. UncleFudd |
