One of my 5" 1911s filled with 230 gr. HydraShoks in 8 rd. Wilson combat mags.
Nothing feels as good as steel!

Day to day generally my Glock 30 w/.45 ACP 230 gr. Hydra-Shoks.
When venturing into the urban jungle downtown at night the 30 goes into an ankle holster and my Glock 21 goes on my hip, also loaded with 230gr. Hydra-Shoks. A back up mag for the 21 will also fit into the 30. When venturing into the mountains here in Colorado for camping or hiking, I generally slip the Glock 30 into my daypack or backpack, and put my Smith 3" 629 on my hip and alternate every other cylinder with 225 grain Barnes Expander rounds and 240 grain Hydra-Shoks. My thinking with the .44 Mag is that while you still need to be vigilant for two legged predators, there are four legged ones in the mountains too, and the Barnes Expander is a better choice for bear or cats.

I carry my USP compact 9mm with 135 gr Premium Hydra-Shoks (not sure what the premium is, might just be the low recoil I dunno). I might replace them with a standard HP +P though as the USP is warrantied to shoot +P+ loads.
In any case I will probably end up stacking. I'm not down to EDC yet as my holster hasn't arrived yet. I imagine a stack of 3 or 4 Hydra-Shoks and then some +P FMJ. If I'm in a situation where I need more than 3-4 bullets I will worry less about collateral damage and more about absolute raw penetration.

Forget it, ACC. Most combat shooters today can't see frangible bullets. Why, I don't know. Jurras had this problem back in the '50s when he tried (sucessfully) to introduce the shooting world to lightweight JHPs. That started the uncivil war between the heavy bullet people and the high-velocity people. It is still on-going today, but with considerably less heat, and mostly amoung rifle shooters. Marshall had a lot to do with introducing shooters to reality.
Most people don't remember that lightweight JHPs made the 9mmP a viable weapon and gave the .357 mag a 90+% OSS. I remember carrying a S&W M-27 when the only effective round I could find was a 158 grn LHP. A 230 grn hardball .45 ACP round is about 70% effective for the first shot, but the same weight bullet in Federal Hydra-Shok is over 90%. The Strasbourg tests opened the door and more and more light is shining through. Eventually the truth about JHPs prevailed and it will again for frangiles, but by then we'll probably have a universal gun ban, certainly one against frangibles and JHPs, making the whole thing moot. Small, easy to conceal, comfortable to carry self-defense guns need adequate ammo. That is not always available, particularly for snubbies and many sub-compact autoloaders fall into the snubby class. JHPs without adequate energy (.32 ACP) either don't expand or penetrate if they do. You got to optimize and shoot to hit vitals. Under my present threat conditions I carry sub-compact handguns in 9mmP and .357 mag. Under certain conditions (shorts and knit shirt) I carry a mini-autoloader in .32 ACP. My guns are Kel-Tec P-11, Taurus PT111, Taurus 651 and Kel-Tec P-32. I have a problem with the P-32 and the other mini-autos. They are just too small to shoot well. No shootability or pointability. P-11s used to have to be worked on before they shot well. My first had about a 15 lb trigger pull. This can be fixed, but it is a delicate balancing act between trigger and firing pin springs. In guns this size ammo is as important as the weapon. I load Glasers in my autoloaders and MagSafes in my revolvers. Yeah, I miss my SIG 220 and my old S&W M-27, but I refuse to carry even my SIG 239 unless threat conditions escalate considerably. They are heavy, clumsy and uncomfortable. Check the mall cowboys, all carrying 35 oz service weapons and walking on one pants cuff or the other. In summer some look as if they were carrying . . . well, big, semi-concealed guns. I'd laugh, but I'm afraid that one of them would shoot me. Old Timer Last edited by Old Timer; 12-16-2008 at 11:41 AM.. |

Taurus Millennium Pro P-140 with Winchester 180 gr JHP
Rock Island Armory 1911 45 ACP 230 gr Black Talon JHP - hardball in extra mag Kel-Tec PF-9 9MM 125 gr Starfire JHP Taurus SS .38 spl snubbie - 125 gr +P JHP Until recently, my back-up was a Titan .25. I know folks look down on these little guns, but mine is very accurate and I wouldn't feel scared using it in an emergency.

If I don't have it on my hip it will be in the front seat of the truck Springfield XD 40cal with two 12 round clips filled with Hornady 155gr JHP's. It's not my most expensive pistol but it sure likes spending time with me. Whenever the wife and I travel the pistol is always at arms reach stored away in a backpack. The wife has ask me on numerous occasions did you bring your gun.

I'm new here, first day. I'm an older man, live in South Texas and have had a permit to carry for eight years. Dissapointed in you guys so far. I was going to ask what you recomend for concealed carry. The ones most of you carry I couldn't conceal. We dress very sparingly for this hot weather. I carry most a .22 Mag mini revolver. Was going to ask if the new Ruger .380 was good but I bet you think I'm a kid, yes just 83 but very active. Give me a sensible answer on the Ruger .380. Thanks, Glen

Rossi 351 snub .38 with Speer 135 +P. I handled every .38/.357 snub gun in the store before buying. The Rossi was the best fit for my hand, and had the best factory trigger.
Taurus 65 4" .357 Mag. with Speer Gold Dot 125's. Good, solid full-house carry piece. The Taurus also had the best feel for my hand and had the best trigger of any full-sized .357 Mag. in the the store. Not knocking Ruger, S&W, and the rest. Just saying I didn't want to waste time and money for a trigger job on a new gun. |

That was the best choice then! A comfortable gun is one that will be shot more and with more confidence than an uncomfortable one.
I picked a Sig P228 for 2 choices. I wanted a dependable firearm for wearing in the "office" for a year in a hot climate and the second reason was it had to have common parts to the military that my armor could get parts for. After trying a few different ones the Sig won and has served me well. The 228 is a comfortable tool in my hands as well. |

I'm still carrying the same custom Colt Commander I was carrying at the beginning of this thread years ago.
It has served me well and I see no reason to change as it is still as accurate as the day it was built. Oh, and somedays I carry this Kimber. |

Amen to that! Very nice sidearms, indeed. I'm glad you're not like a friend of mine, who criticized my summertime choice of a .38 Spcl. while his Custom Shop S&W 1911 was sitting back home in a safe. I invited him to draw down on me and see who wins. It's one thing to preach ".45 ACP," but you're one guy who practices what he preaches. Good for you!

Most often for me it's a Glock 26 or a Glock 33. I do have my eye on a Kimber Ultra Carry II though, assuming I ever have enough spare cash to buy one.
I like the .45 1911 a great deal, but I find the standard versions of it simply too heavy and too bulky for everyday carry. Just my viewpoint.

S&W Model 60-10 .357 revolver with 3" barrel and rubber grips. At home and in town, I load it with Speer Gold Dot .38 +P 135 G JHPs for self defense. While hiking, I load it with Hornady Custom .357 Mag +P 125 G XTPs. In snake country, I substitute CCI Blazer .357 Mag shot rounds with #9 shot for a couple of the Hornady rounds. (I don't hunt, but I do hike and camp in places where bears and cougars are not uncommon.) I also always have handy/carry at least two speed loaders loaded with whatever I'm using.
