I know what the purpose of muzzle brakes and flash suppressors is, but what are the purposes, advantages or disadvantages of all of the different types out there for the AR-15/M-16?
Izzy, bird cage, phantom, Y-comp... are different kinds better for different purposes, or just mostly looks? Thanks for satisfying my curiosity and helping me learn a bit.

Flash surpressor usually have little vents all th way around and muzzle brake usually are cut at an angle releasing air up or just have slits on the top of the barrel

I understand that much. My main question is about the many different styles available for different weapons, especially the AR-15 / M-16.

your main advantage on any of them will be more control no matter which one you go with
As far as disadvantages it will be signifetly louder no matter which on you go with.
