Default Blue Angels Air Show (multiple pic warning!)

As many of you know, Marlin and I attended the Blue Angels Air Show in Pensacola last weekend. What a thrill! Here’s some pics of the Blue Angels in action. I apologize for the quality of the pics. They were moving so fast that I didn’t have time to try to zoom in, so I kept the lens angle fairly wide and depended on being able to crop the pic afterwards. This means there is not as much detail as I would like. Also, some are just plain blurry from trying to track them across the sky to get the shot.

Diamond Formation:

Double Farvel (notice that two are inverted):

Echelon Formation:

Echelon Formation (different angle):

An inverted crossing:

In addition to the Blue Angels, there were lots of other airplanes, as well.

jet-assisted takeoff of the C-130 “Fat Albert”

the A-10 “Warthog”

the F-15 "Strike Eagle"

the F-86 “Sabre”

a wing-walker on a specially-modified Grumman Ag Cat

“Sky Soldiers” Cobra attack helicopters

the F-18F “Super Hornet” (flying inverted)

a very special formation:
clockwise from the front of the formation: F-86, F-15, A-10 and F-4

Great pictures, Hon, considering you couldn't focus and the speeds were, for the most part, in excess of 500 mph, and at times exceeding 600.

They didn't say in the program but I felt the diamond of the mixed aircraft must represent the jet age from the beginning dating Korea to the present. One could possiblly imagine Korea, Viet Nam, Afghanistan/Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom. It was awesome.

Dale Snodgrass, in the F-86, put on a lengthy show that, by itself, would have made the trip well worth it not counting seeing the Angels, which in this Air Force (The MacLaughlins during WWI, WWII and Korea!) family's mind, is a much more precision team than the "Birds". Both do a good job but I have always favored the Blues.....

The F-86 part of the show and the wing stunts/walking were the longest individual shows other than the Blues. I never realized until seeing them together how small the Sabre was compared to todays fighters. The next day we saw the MIG-15 at the Air Museum and it looked even smaller than our Sabre. It was a shocker to me to see that in reality.

Some Details:
Photo 9: the a/c identified as an F-22 is an F-15.
Photo 12: The Apaches look like Cobras.
Photo 14: clockwise from the F-86: F-86, F-15, A-10 and F-4

Don’t mean to be picky. I love a good air show myself. My first was at Sofley Field, just outside of Pensacola when I was going through flight training in 1970. Sofley is now closed and I am a retired old geezer.

Corrections gratefully accepted. I will be the first to admit I know next to nothing about these aircraft.

I have been to so many air shows, you tend to get a little jaded. That said, when I worked at Patuxent River, when the Blue Angles came for the airshow, the base shut down Friday afternoon for the practice show.
When the Blue Angles were in A-4s, they performed a practice/arrival show at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, DC. The practice show was late afternoon on a Friday. Andrews is located right next to the Washington Beltway. Rush hour traffic pretty well came to a standstill as they were buzzing the traffic on the Beltway.
I have seen the shows for over 35 yrs, and the best show is the F-18. The F-4 was great, but it took 500 kts. to do overhead maneuvers. The rules are a little different now, and they can't do what they could then. The A-4s of the Blue Angles and T-38s and F-16s of the Airforce Thunderbirds look like toys. The F-18 does something I have never seen before: a 4 plane dirty (wheels and flaps extended) loop.

SouthernMoss..........
pictures are good I have the same camera and I don't think I could have taken any better. I don't know whether its the speed that they are going or what.

But if you need some pictures of the Blue angels I have some that were sent to me and I could send you them to you if you like. I didn't take them...I'm not that good with a camera.

You & Marlin have a nice holiday

Hey SoMo,
Here's one of my favorites as one comes down the flight line then makes an abrupt pull up and goes nearly vertical.

and this is a nice one up close and personal. Let me know and next time we'll try and get you a little closer.

Thanks for the kudos, but I cannot tell a lie. (I didn't photograph them, but I did take the picture . . . . .

from the Blue Angels' web site. What a cheater I am !
I didn't know how to reduce their size. They weren't that big on their website.

One of my favorites is when they're building up speed and that vapor cloud huddles around near the cockpit.
