Find a Sig Hammerli Trailside before they are gone, any ammo, easiest to disassemble and clean, (Have two Ruger 22's) the instruction book is kept with the cleaning kit. I understand there is an upgrade for about $50 to make cleaning very simple, it is an aftermarket. As far a P22 you have to find the exact ammo. Sold mine!

Ease of disassembly is an individual opinion.
Ran into a guy at the range yesterday. He was shooting some impressive 25-yard groups with a Buckmark target model and Ruger MKII slabside. Asked him how he liked the Buckmark. He said it shot well, but the two takedown(?) screws kept coming loose and it wasn't nearly as easy to fieldstrip as his Ruger. |

If ease of disassembly/reassembly is the criterion, then I'd recommend the 22A. Shoots very accurately and d/r takes less than 30 seconds. That is if you don't get careless and launch the recoil spring, rod and buffer into the nether regions of your workbench. Then it takes about a week while you order a couple of each from S&W and wait for shipping. |

Greener, good point on the 22A, I have had a few close calls, almost losing the spring and rod down the furnace floor ducts. I put a red dot on mine, take a couple hundred rounds of Minimags to the range, and enjoy trouble free plinking. For an inexpensive pistol, this is one of my best. I guess you just relate S&W with revolvers.

Given your idea of a backup rather than a hunting pistol,I'd have to go with the P-22. Never have had a jam or misfire and it's small enough for a concealed carry.

Greener
I had understood that the MKII's were the most complicated to work on and the MKIII's were "improved", perhaps I have that backwards? Also, dont they make some kind of aftermarket parts for these pieces that make reassembly easier for the average Joe? Crpdeth

I'd take a new one down as far as possible and thoroughly clean all the preservative oil and any particles from production. Cleaning after that is a matter of some debate. I usually clean mine a couple of times/month (about every 500 rounds). If I shoot really dirty ammo, they don't get past the workbench on the way in from the range until they are cleaned. Although I've read threads where people talk about not cleaning rimfires for years and thousands of rounds, I've found that letting one go increases the "ammo" problems.

I use my buckmark hunter model for hunting and all around target shooting but my wlather ppk/s in 22lr is my preffered all around pistol. My SW22a I put a red dot on and while it is now extremely accurate can not be holstered so is just a range gun. I have a few other 22 autos but not real mainstream. For a nice piece my Bernardelli 80 in 22lr is sweet as is my FEG ap22. It all depends on what you want out of the gun and which one fits you comfortably.

My nephew has the same problem. He just picked up a Mark III this morning. He field stripped it to clean it, and now can't get it back together. He's very frustrated. He says everything is just too tight.

To be sure, my MKIII is a heck of alot tighter than my MK II... got to agree with greener- MKIII's upper and lower are a bit tricky and must be exactly lined up to get the bolt stop pin through. Mine does require the use of a rubber mallet. My MK II is the opposite, no effort at all is required to line things up so that there is no overlap.... Love the Ruger MK platform; ingenious design, accurate pistol built to last ![]() -pawn ![]()

That's pretty sweet. I've been thinking about a stainless URX, but I need to play catch-up for awhile after buying a new 1911.

Ive had a P22 for about 3 years, and I love it. It shoots real well for me, rarely had a malfunction. Well, except for that time I tried shoot subsonic rounds out of it (FAIL).
I do want to buy one of these though: http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firear...10107&return=Y |

I had a Browning Buckmark with a 5 or 6 inch barrel. I now have a S&W 22A with a 5 1/2" barrel. I bought it because of its price, but I have come to like it a lot especially since it shoots the cheap ammo very well.
