One of the things that ticks me off the most about this "politically correct" world we live in today is that the traditional music of the season is rarely heard in public anymore. When I was a kid, it was heard everywhere--in the malls, on the public streets (in the small town where I grew up), in church, and playing in the background of every retail store one entered. Today one is lucky to find a decent CD of traditional songs to play at home! It's sad, really, because I think the music gives a special life to the season, an ambiance that cannot be achieved any other way. Anyway, what are some of your favorites, both religiously oriented ones and just old-fashioned songs of the season? Here are some of mine.
1. Silent Night (of course!) but especially the original German version. 2. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 3. White Christmas (but only with Bing Crosby singing it!) 4. Hark the Hearld Angels Sing. 5. The Carol of the Bells 6. Do You Hear What I Hear (with Bing Crosby!) 7. Ave Maria 8. The Little Drummer Boy

Shooter, when we were kids, my Twin Brother and I (Yeah, you only know half of me.
) would sit in the floor at my Grannys house in front of the huge wooden record player in her living room and make her play The Little Drummer Boy over and over while singing to us, I was so privileged to have known her before sickness and medication totally changed her...There is no doubt that this is my favorite Christmas song as it brings back so many great memories of this wonderfull lady and how she doted on us as long as she could. Where ever I am when I happen to hear this song (And fortunately the local shops and even large grocers in my area do still play the old ones) I cant help but think back to a time that I'd give anything to go back to. Beautifull memories Crpdeth

Yes, Crp, the memories are beautiful indeed. That's what I meant with my earlier comment about the music contributing so much to the season. When I was in high school we had a group called the Madrigal Singers of which I was a member. Every Christmas we would put together a presentation of traditional Christmas songs and perform it during the last assembly before Christmas vacation for the entire school. During the week before Christmas we "went on the road" with the act, so to speak, by caroling around the neighborhoods of the town where I grew up, with special emphasis on some of the neighborhoods with older folks, and also on the hospital. I have some wonderful memories indeed of that experience. For some, it was the only real taste of Christmas they received.

Even 'Tanenbaum' is beautifull to hear.
But my favorite comes from my childhood, 'The Little Drummer Boy'.

I like that one too, Berto, but it seems everytime I hear it, I can't help thinking about Maryland!

I love all the ones you listed, Pistol, as well as those the others have mentioned. Traditionally, I sing O Holy Night at church every year, and I get goose bumps every time from the feeling and emotion that come through the words and melody.
Another of my favorites, while not an old "traditional" song, is Mary, Did You Know.

Check out the Christmas songs from Mannheim Steamroller. Use a good stereo and turn up the volume, you just might love it. I went to a concert in OKC a few years ago and it may be the best show I've been too.

My vote is for "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." Classic.
Also enjoy... Christmas In Kilarney (Bing Crosby), Gloria! In Excelsis Deo!(Roger Whitaker), Holly Jolly Christmas (Burl Ives), Put your biscuits in the oven, and get your buns in bed! (Sam Drucker and the Hooterville Five), The Christmas Song (Nat King Cole), The Miller Beer commercial music with the horse drawn sled, and just about anything Christmas song that Andy Williams sang (geez, is he a bag a bones these days!). Merry CHRISTmas! Pat Hurley |

I mentioned above that I like Silent Night, but especially if it is sung in the original German language version. This carol was actually Austrian and first sung in 1818.
Below is the original German language version, and below it, is a literal English version of the song. Notice how that differs from the English version we commonly sing today, which is also given below. DEUTSCH Music: Franz Xaver Gruber, 1818 Words: Joseph Mohr, 1816/1818 Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, Alles schläft; einsam wacht Nur das traute hochheilige Paar. Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar, Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh! Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh! Christ, in deiner Geburt! Christ, in deiner Geburt! ENGLISH Literal English prose translation by Hyde Flippo Silent night, holy night All is sleeping, alone watches Only the close, most holy couple. Blessed boy in curly hair, Sleep in heavenly peace! Sleep in heavenly peace! Silent night, holy night, Shepherds just informed By the angels' hallelujah, It rings out far and wide: Christ the Savior is here! Christ the Savior is here! Silent night, holy night, Son of God, oh how laughs Love out of your divine mouth, Because now the hour of salvation strikes for us. Christ, in Thy birth! Christ, in Thy birth! ENGLISH AS SUNG TODAY. Silent night, holy night All is calm all is bright 'Round yon virgin Mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia; Christ the Savior is born Christ the Savior is born Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

Silent Night in any language.
Adeste Fideles Fum, fum, fum. (This is from Spain) White Christmas (but only with Bing Crosby singing it!) Agree on the whole idea. Sleigh ride. Winter wonderland. Oh Night. I'm not sure on this title

Night of peace, night of love, Everyone is sleeping all about. The stars spread their light, Beautifully announcing the baby Jesus. The star of peace shines, The star of peace shines. Night of peace, night of love. Everyone is sleeping all about. The only ones watching in the darkness Are the shepherds in the field And the star of Bethlehem, And the star of Bethlehem. Night of peace, night of love. Everyone is sleeping all about. Over the holy baby Jesus A star spreads its light, Brightly over the King, Brightly over the King. Night of peace, night of love. Everyone is sleeping all about. The shepherds, the mother too. And the star of peace And the star of peace.

All of the above are great, and thanks for the translated version Pistol. But I'm going to vote for Manheim Steamroller and almost any of there Christmas songs.

I have always thought George Friderick Handel's Messiah is the most beautiful piece of music ever written. I do have some other favorites though.
O Holy Night Silent Night White Cristmas The First Noel Angels We Have Heard on High I bought a CD from a local Christian store the other day so I could hear some good holiday tunes around the house. Tennesse Ernie Ford's Christmas favorites. I also think Dolly Partons voice is very well suited to some of the more beautiful Christmas tunes. |
