I too have a 640 Mossy.I just bought it 2mo. ago.Had to get from Numrich a new mag also.Everyone is correct about the accuracy of this gun,it is truly amazing.I wish I had the confidence in improving the trigger myself. can someone tell me why mine is stamped 640KD? What does the "D" refer to? Joe

GunHugger, would you happen to have the 640K manual in a pdf file? I made a Word copy of your post, but the pictures in the manual are fuzzy. I received my 640 on my 13th birthday in 1961. The manual is long gone. The rifle is still a tack driver.

new member here...i just picked up a beautiful chuckster for my 9yr. old daughter's b-day!!! i only paid $30!!! NO B.S,! have it disassembled and all the steel soaking in solvent. (it's terribly dirty) what are opinions/suggestions asto value, and should i lightly sand stock and apply fresh coat of poly or lins. oil? overall condition of metal is 95%+/- and stock is almost as good as it gets, xcept the finish looks rather dull & yellowed.what about touching up the blueing where its rubbed a bit thin? any info quick would be appreciated as i am going to be re-assembling for her to shoot 2day! thank you. almost forgot, also has scope on it ;5x2.5x o.f. mossberg and sons model a25.

Welcome to the forum, if the gun is truly at 95% then I would not touch anything. If the stock is yellowed then I would assume its finished in a shellac. You would have to do a complete strip to redo in anything else. BLO, true-oil, and varnishes don't do well when mixed.

I used to have a 640KD. it indeed was a tack pusher. I traded it off for a .30-30. things dumb kids do... I traded a llama mini max .45 for it. that was a good trade

Hello fellow Chuckster enthusists! 37 ys ago I recieved a model 640K Chuckster (stamped on the barrel) for my 12th birthday from my grandfather. It was beautiful & perfect at the time. It developed problems with the firing pin not always firing rounds and also had ejector problems. While in the US Navy my parents had teenaged foster kids who needed more than a loving family; they stole a Winchester Ranger 12ga single barrel shotgun ,a Stevens over/under 22cal-410ga and damaged the Chuckster breaking the plastic cover at the rear of the barrel and appears to have cracked the stock in the area of the trigger guard-combing area. I havn't found very much of a parts selection for addressing the bolt and cover issues. Anybody know of any leads? I think the cracking could possibly be repaired by drilling & dowel pinning the cracked area... does it sound reasonable?... If so what would be the recommended type & size of dowel pins? I'd need to seal the area where the pins were with polyurathane or??? I'm open for ideas and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hey all, I just joined after finding this thread through a "Chuckster" Google search
I purchased a 640KB last weekend at a local gun show. Spent a few hours getting it all cleaned up. Then mounted a new scope on it. This morning I had it out to the range for the first time. I'll say my groups were ok after tuning in but the trigger is horrible! I could really use some tips on how to lighten the pull. Any help out there?

I just had to join and post. My first firearm was a 640k...bought it as soon as I turned 18, I think for about $100. Through all these years I have bought and sold various guns depending on financial status but never could bring myself to sell my first gun. I've loved it from day one. I haven't shot in many years and took it out because I have a groundhog living under my house now and I want to kill the little SOB because I have to hear it every time he gets into my wife's garden. So I took it out to zero in and guess what? Its already perfect. In fact, I've never in my life had to do so much as move the rear sight one notch. No matter what I do or which ammo I buy this gun always seems to just put the slug right where I want it. I even managed 1.5 inch groups despite not having shot for many years. I'm so very glad I never got rid of this gun. Its got a couple dings and the dust cover for the bolt slot snapped off but it still works great...I don't even mind the clunky trigger since I'm used to it. Maybe someday I'll take it apart and polish it up but I doubt it.

I have a 640 KAS (stamped on the barrel) no serial numbers, I cannot find this model listed anywhere. If anyone can tell me about this particular model it would be greatly appreciated

THE ONLY fix is the BKL offset rings. (I used the #274) these will allow the mounting of most scopes to a usable position. This is a curse of the latter mossberg 300/600 series design. Along with the crappy trigger. the trigger can be worked. Although I have a 640 that will shoot 3/8" at a100yds if i do my part with the original trigger,About 6#s at least.I got my 340 below 3# so Guess I'm gonna work on the 640 this winter. You inherited what will become one of your favorite rifles, enjoy.--JMJ--AKA-- Jim the Mossberg Junkie
Where can i buy the offset rings?? I checked a couple of store web sites with nothing coming up?? I too have some work to do on the inherited ole Mossy but i do have the time.

I was in the process of preparing the rifle to be given to one of my grandsons and during the sighting in process noticed that this particular rifle can be fired when the bolt is not locked down. The bolt had been inadvertantly bumped which caused the bolt to move upward as if the shell was going to be ejected. The rifle will still fire when the bolt is up in an unlocked and unsafe position. In fact I can actually begin to move the bolt slightly to the rear and the rifle will still dry fire.
I know this can happen with a live round because I accidentally fired the rifle when the bolt was in an unlocked and unsafe mode which resulted in a discharge of hot gas from around the bolt and down through the magazine port resulting in a minor powder burn.
I have sent the rifle in for evaluation but would urge caution if you own one of the early model 640K's.
I am now 61 years old and have been the proud owner of the 640K Chuckster since I was a young boy. I purchased it in the first year of manufacture and it has been lovingly cared for since that time. The monte carlo stock is very nice and it is indeed a nail driver. After returning from the Marines in 1973, I took my young wife to a 125 yard range and we sgot at a large, standard bulls eye target. I was putting each shot in the bullseye and when I handed it to her for her first shooting experience, she was missing the bullseye everytime. I was using a spotting scope and the rifle was fitted with a Weaver scope. Well, when they called a cease fire, I walked with her to check out the target and see where she was hitting. She insisted she hit every shot. To make a long story short, she was shooting at the numbers in the rings outside of the bullseye and HITTING EVERYONE at 125 yards.

Hi all, I have a mossberg 640k that has been damaged by fire while laying on the seat of a car. It has been sitting around for many years since. all plastic parts are gone. The barrel is plugged. clip missing. The bolt still moves and it actually will still dry fire. Maybe good for parts if some one needs. I thought about fixing but is not really cost effective to fix at this point so if someone needs parts from bolt and trigger mechanism this may help. thanks

Wow, I never realized my beloved Chuckster is so popular today. Mine dates back to the late 60s and was and still is a very accurate rifle. Two things I should mention. One time I chambered a round and failed to close the bolt completely. I pulled the trigger, and it would not fire. i noticed the problem, and when I closed the bolt the gun fired! I don't know if this was specific to my gun, but thought I'd throw it out there. A few years back, I took it to a gunsmith and had a trigger job done. Well, lets just say it is better than it was but still no target pull. But no matter really, I still take the Mossy out when the weather is good and have no problem shooting an inch at 100 yards. A buddy of mine actually borrows it from time to time, as he is a varmint shooter and the .22 mag gets him in to places where farmers frown on the .22/250 he usually uses. Says he regularly makes headshots on woodchucks out to 125 yards. Great post and walk down memory lane. Thanks.

Hello,

I have a 640k that I recently bought for my son. Having heard great things about this rifle, it's been a bit of a disappointing experience for him thus far as the rifle has not worked well since we brought it home from the gun show. The magazine seems to not work properly, the bolt has some issues ... not extracting shells reliably ... and now today, we went out so sight in a new scope he got for XMAS, and it stopped firing. I believe the firing pin may have gotten damaged. I would be interested in the complete bolt assembly from your parts gun. Can you send some pics of the gun and more specifically the bolt. Do you know if the rifle shot well before being damaged in the fire?

Thanks,

Bought and sold more than a few Mossberg .22's.
This is one I kept.

Some post here about "trigger jobs"; I never had an issue with that; but I did put on a "trigger shoe"; wouldn't be the same without it!

Go to page one of this thread, follow the instructions that I posted for disassembly. Your rifle just needs to be cleaned and lubed properly. Old dried up oil has gummed up the bolt.

I have a chuckster that i bought a couple of years ago, when i had a sudden itch for a 22 mag. It is very accurate, with open sights, but as you all know, scope mounts are hard to get properly fitted, but i did my best, with a set of weaver mounts, and an Alpen 3x9x40 scope.
The magazine has been bent with pliers, and fooled with, until it wont even hold shells, much less feed shells. I need a new one, i guess, but don't know where to look.
Also, the bolt seems loose, and floppy, and doesn't lock down, so you have to make sure its down, before it will fire.
This gun has been well used, and the bluing is wore off the end of the barrel the stock is rough, and has been polyurethaned, or something, but for a "truck gun", its great, its taken many groundhogs out of our hayfield. I'd just like to give a little back to the gun, . So any tips on fixing the problem with the clip, or the bolt, would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Kelleborne (Noob)

Kelleborne,

Magazines for the current Savage 22mag/17HMR will work just fine in your Chuckster.

Like this, I find them at the local Walmart.

Check page one of this thread, there are instructions for disassembly. Take it apart, clean, lube and go over it. Most likely your problems will be solved.

I to just picked up a used 640kc chuckster and put a scope on it. The scope is a Bushnell 3-9x40 Dusk&Dawm I had a KWIK-SITE KWIK-MOUNT Adapter for 22 grooved receiver rifles model-KS-W22 M and then I had them put on WEAVER TOP MOUNT 1" HIGH DUAL EXTENSION #49045. This brought the scope back some since there is not much room with the grooves. I will add some pictures to show you.
