If someone asks me for a jump I tell them only on one condition... I PUT THE CABLES ON....PERIOD. They don't like it they can find someone else. Even if done right it can still kill your alternator.... I lost 3 in a row all of which were right after a jump start done correctly.... You should find out what your state laws say about returns. I think here in Ark that there is a 2 week period that allows some kind of return under certain conditions. Thats what i heard anyway. I read somewhere that someone had bought a car and brought it back 2 days later with massive problems and got their old car back. A G6 would definately be alot quieter that is for sure...and probably built alot better than the Aveo. Gm's entry level cars like the aveo always were a little iffy at best. GM has made some pretty good mid level to upper level cars over the years, but their entry level cars always had this and that going on with them. The old Cavaliers were an somewhat of an exception. They ran like troopers but still had lots of electrical problems. mike gn

Your new car troubles are like lemons; they grow according to the climate. I bought a 1986 Chev C10 new and am still driving it. Had an early problem with the transmission not shifting out of low gear, and had it fixed under warranty. The upholstery (under my finest side) has slowly given way, and the white paint started peeling from the hood after a particularly wet winter about 8 years ago, but mechanically, it just runs and runs, perhaps because I am proactive about replacing belts, hoses, tires, oil, filters, and positronic gravitational acuators, so it still smells like an old truck. GM's paint has been inferior for decades; let's hope they have fixed it by now (the white and the silver).
Fords are good too; they have had superior paint for decades, but I will not declare which company builds the better vehicle because I have been out of the loop too long. I just hope the American companies can recapture the local market by building a comparable or better vehicle than those available from overseas, because we are struggling to keep up with the global market. Nuts. I have to go butter my bacon. LL |

Gee, I thought people bought new cars to avoid these kinds of problems.
![]() I've heard good things about the G6 from the people in my office who have had them for rental cars. Reputations are funny things. My 10-year-old Jaguar is doing great. It is fast, handles great, and of course, is very comfy. The Saab 9-3 that preceeded it wouldn't stay out of the shop. Even my 44-year-old Corvair has been very dependable. How many people can say that?

I have to agree with LDbennet
As much as I love old cars newer cars are much better made. 30 years ago it was the exception for a car to have 100,000 miles on it. Many many cars were in the scrap yards at 80,000. Now it is the norm for cars only 5 years old to have over 100,000 and still going strong. When an old car was discovered with really high miles it was the norm and the engine and transmission had been gone through. A quart of oil between oil changes was the norm back then and we never have to have the valves ground and rings put in anymore. There is no doubt about it the new cars will drive many many more miles than the old ones without major repairs. They get better fuel mileage and are more comfortable (except for room to stretch). No more carb kits-fuel injection is the best thing in the automotive world ever and is a major cause for long engine life. No more yearly tune ups. And who would want to go back to drum brakes???? |

[QUOTE=glocknut;230324Are you loaded with guilt...or shame?
mike gn[/QUOTE] Both. Only now at 41 am I attempting to cleanse my soul from a previous life of wine (Boone's Farm), women (horizontally accessible), song (mostly Puente), and debauchery (night putting with the Dean's daughter). Stop leading me to sin, Mike! Southern has had her fill of this salty locker room talk about women servicing us while we drive and being overcome by Tito Puente music. I think I need a shower now. I thought that I posted an update last night to my situation, but I guess I was just too tired and didn't do it... Who knows
In any case, I got my car back yesterday, I almost astol the rental Pontiac G6. They took a while to get it fixed because the new computer had to be ordered as they didn't have any in stock. I wasn't in a hurry I was enjoying speeding around town in the rental. I had them try to get me into a used G6 but they wanted about 80 dollars more a month. I am not willing to or able to spend that much. The service manager had test driven the car and they believe that it will run just fine now. I guess it isn't very common to have the ECM go out in these cars from what they said. In all the dealer did take care of me, They paid for all the gas in the rental and my car came back with a full tank. I can get free car washes anytime I want, and I have another free tank coming when I fill out a survey. I think I will hold on to this car for a year or less then trade it on something a little more expensive when my credit is where I want it. |

Trading in a few years with a Gm product is gonna cost ya. Their trade in value is pretty bad. Sorry, its the truth..... If i were to own a Gm product, and I am still open to the idea someday...I would only do it one way... BIG BIG extended warranty!!!!! Spending a little extra and getting the extended "comprehensive" warranty is well worth the money. Honda offers an extended "bumper to bumper" warranty that is 6 years, 100,000 miles for about $1700 bucks. And i can buy it anytime before the end of the initial 3 year 36,000 mile warranty expires. I think its worth it and it will be my next purchase. My logic is that if the car makes it to 100k it will probably go well beyond that. If there is something that is wearing abnormally it will probably break in the first 100k ? At least i assume anyway. These Accords are noted for making it to 250,000 miles and still going strong. Everyone i talk to except for one person, who lost a tranny, say that they are good long haul cars... My advice to you vegastech, is to get whatever extensions you can to the warranty, even if its only a drivetrain warranty, and then drive the doors off of it. You are in a better position being near the dealership to get it in for servicing when it needs it. Thats one of the few good things about living in a big city. The trade in value on chevys just make it more sensible to drive them long term in my opinion. Thats my 2 cents anyway... mike gn

I once had a new Ford Contour, the first year they came out, for a company car. Dealership called to tell me it was in. ad a co-worker dropped me off to pick it up. Drove home, about 11 miles as I recall. Next day - no reverse. Trany went bad.
New Model + New Year = NO PARTS FOR REPAIR Got a dealer loaner for nearly two months waiting for a new tranny from the factory... This of course was many years ago.
