I have a Norinco 56 and there are many other rifles that will go out the door before it does. Norinco put out some great stuff. If I can find a MAK90 for the right price it is a no-brainer.

If you can master it here is a quick re assemble technique for the top cover that works for most of the AK faimily.

Take it slow at first, the top cover goes on last, recoil spring in place. Sit the top cover on top, front end in it's groove. Pin it with your off hand thumb. Then slap the rear upside edge with the heel of the palm smartly. It's quick and once you learn it, looks real cool.

You need to practice a few times.

WOW...

I sold this one to my brother who in turn sold it to a police dispatcher in a neighboring town and when he runs the numbers, it comes up STOLEN?!?!?!

My brother is on his way over there to fill out a police report and I've been on the phone with Village gun and pawn to find out what we should do next, they are going to look through their paperwork, but that's the only information I get from them, for now.

They assure me that each firearm is "ran" before they buy it, but admit that "anything could fall through the cracks".

Now I am digging around trying to find my receipt and stuff for that thing, but since my divorce there is no telling where it is.

Bleh!

Wow dude.

Every time I've traded or bought a gun from an individual, I get it checked. I always get a few butterflies waiting on the response. You really just never can tell. It's like taking a bet that you didn't want to and watching the dice roll away. Never had bad news yet though.

Sorry you gotta deal with that. Hope it blows over easy.

On another note, it's good to know sometimes stolen weapons sometimes get located and returned. Imagine the ther side of the coin...some dude getting a call that he's getting his property back.

Delta, that's just the thing, bro... I bought this piece at Village Gun and Pawn in Sulphur Springs, TX....So it should have been clear. I guess there were some numbers transposed when they relayed the serial number, because NOW it comes back as stolen property from Austin TX twelve years ago.

You are right though, as my brother and I have discussed over and over today, the rightful owner will be very proud to have his rifle back, in good shape, after all these years, AND we are glad we never got pulled over with it in the vehicle... That would ruin your week!

I am awful curious what other members here think, though... Who is at fault here (besides the thief).

Should my brothers money be refunded by the pawn shop?

Understand.

That is tough. If I was the pawn broker, I'd take responsibility for selling the weapon accidentally and refund the purchase...it's a reputation thing.

The one and only person/persons guilty are the original retailers (pawn scum)
This rifle had three chances (pawn shop)
First when pawned, second when cleared for sale, third when sold.

There is no liability except for that pawn shop.

Well, we stopped in the gun shop yesterday on our way past there while trying to work and I have to say that the owners really didn't impress me regarding their willingness to make things good, stating that "Were still waiting to hear more from the PD and these things occasionally happen, blaa bla bla". I'm not saying they wont, but that's the feeling we get. The sad part is that I really like these guys, I bought my first deer rifle from them and never shopped anywhere else, I have sent them more business than they'll ever know, so I suppose I just feel a little jaded.

On the upside, we did hear from the PD and found out that the original owner's Home Owners Insurance paid for the rifle back when it was stolen, and that the thief WAS caught (although the rifle couldn't be found) and there will be a property hearing where my brother may actually be awarded the rifle! I don't know how that works because I would think that the Ins Co. who paid for the property would want it back, unless they "wrote it off" or basically went under.

Anyway, we'll see...

Well, I am amazed...

My brother was handed this rifle back, today... Long story, but certified letters were sent to the original owner and his Ins Co, with no response, they were sent yet again concerning a property hearing, after a long wait with still no response, they decided against the hearing all together and simply handed it to him.

Three months was a long wait, but sometimes things do work out.

I have to give props to the Paris TX PD for being so cool about the whole thing, especially Mr Foreman, I had several enjoyable conversations with this guy concerning, among other things, some nice places to shop.

I am glad this worked out. I was on the other end of a police find several years ago. I had my house broken into and several guns taken. About 6 years later I get a call from the police department saying that I can come pick up my gun, it was recovered during a simple traffic stop - not three miles from my house!!

Don't know how they do it in Texas, but here they have cops called The Pawn Shop Detail. Every week they hit every pawn shop in town. They take the numbers of every gun he has taken in since they were there last (pawned or bought) and run them. Every gun. The only way that a stolen gun could not be found in a pawn shop would be if the thief pawned it, and it was more than a week later that it was reported stolen.

So, the thief pawns the gun. How is this the pawn shop guy's fault? Some years back my daughter called me. Said her gun had been stolen, what should she do? I told her to call the cops. Asked her if she had the SN. She said no. I told her I did, and to get a piece of paper. A few days later she calls me. Pawn Shop Detail found it. It was in "this" pawn shop. Ex-wife's boyfriend pawned it (unbelievable, ain't it, that her mama stole her gun?). Wasn't the pawn shop guy's fault. Donnie's fault. Sara's fault. She stole it and he sold it, knowing it was stolen.

Well, the way it was conveyed to me is that the pawn broker calls in the numbers to a guy at our local PD, the LEO then runs those numbers. In this case a number or letter was transposed during that particular call, giving the impression that it was a clean weapon.

How is it the "pawn shop guys fault"? Well, it is clear in my case, but the way they do it in your town (In my opinion) needs to be revised... Those numbers should be called in before a trade is even made, in all pawn shops.

Albeit, I'm afraid that SOME pawn brokers couldn't care less whether it is stolen or not as long as they get a good deal on it... Not saying these guys I dealt with are like that, I think they are on the up and up, but due to the way they shuffled around and couldn't look my brother in the eye and tell him that things would be "made good" one way or another, we'll have to shop elsewhere from now on, as will a growing number of family, friends and acquaintances... I stand behind the work that I do and I expect no less from the people I trade with.

Glad things turned out well for ya Donny.
I had a bunch of tools stolen. About $4 grand worth of hand & power tools. They were pawned. The cops found them and asked me to go to the pawn shops ( 3 ) to I.D. my stuff.
All of the shop owners, to a man, were way less than helpful and were not happy to see me.

Thankfully I had given a good ID of the tools to the cops beforehand and had their backup.

Write down your serial numbers. Thats what saved me.
