INDUSTRY WARY OF POTENTIAL UPS STRIKE: The Teamsters Union overwhelmingly approved a strike against United Parcel Service Inc. if a new labor agreement covering 230,000 workers is not reached by July 31.

The strike vote yielded a 93 percent favorable response for a walkout if a contract is not reached. Union leaders said talks had not moved forward at a quick enough pace.

"This strike authorization shows that the members are behind their negotiating committee and they demand a strong and fair contract by July 31," said Teamster negotiator Ken Hall.

UPS officials said the strike authorization was expected and did not reflect a slow bargaining pace as the union asserted. Talks have been ongoing since February but mainly on regional or supplemental issues dealing with safety and non-economic concerns. Better than half those matters have been resolved. Wage and other compensation issues will be discussed in a few weeks, officials added.

The mere potential of a strike brings back some unpleasant memories for the industry, which saw much of its business disrupted when the union went on strike for 15 days in 1997. It's a time most companies would just as soon forget.

During the 1997 strike, some suppliers' shipments were backed up to the tune of 450-500 packages a day while others were forced to use other truck lines at significantly higher prices. Even firms that used the U.S. Postal Service for delivery were paying around 10 or 15 percent more than they were laying out to UPS.

Ellett Brothers said at the time that the 1997 strike cost it almost $2.8 million in sales and about $200,000 in profits.

Yep, that last strike cost me a whole delivery that was already
paid for as it was on the truck when the strike began and the
guns I ordered supposedly were never found, nor was I ever
compensated by Ellett Bros or UPS for the mishap!

Needless to say I don't ship guns with UPS anymore, nor
do I do business with Ellett Bros anymore either, and I've
dropped thousands with them in the 15-years I had dealt
with them, they also are outspoken about and in favor of
banning gun shows and think that dealers should strictly
buy from them, they probably would love to see internet
gun sales banned to unless your buying from them. So
screw'em both!

Used to buy from Ellett Bros about 15 years ago. We didn't get good prices until we started spending about 50K/month. There are much better distributors out there.

I think the NRA should take some of my lifetime membership money and have an emergency privet arms shipping service during these strikes! THAT WOULD MAKE THE NEWS!

let 'em strike, neither the Teamsters nor UPS will profit from it, who knows we might all be better off without either one of them
