Default Stinky Paint smell.....

Well my hillbilly shack is at a plateau(sp)? that i can stop at and rest for a bit. I finished painting it today. I chose the brightest white paint the store had. Brighter than super white or brilliant white.... "WHITE BOY WHITE".

Here's my question. I am combating the paint smell with both a fan and I've also put down some baking soda....infact...alot of baking soda!
The smell is pretty persistant. I think the paint is slow to dry because of the humidity in this area.
Anyone have any other ideas or tricks to getting rid of that paint smell as quick as possible? Burn a candle in there or something??

I'll post pics when i get a chance.

Thanks

mike

What type of paint did you use?
If it isn't oil base, I might run the heater to lower the humidity & warm up the place to dry the paint faster...

Regular Latex i guess....
The primer paint was of unknown type. It stunk like you would not believe. I was really getting some strange sensations painting with it. I traded the left over sheet rock for the primer paint which was in an unmarked bucket?
I hired pros to put up the sheetrock....

Actually if you turn the air on and make it cold in the house it will remove the humidity and make it dry quicker. I know from that which I speak

Uh guys... GN is in AR. I don't think he'll want to be turning on the heater any time soon!

A/C is a good idea, though.

Either heat or A/C will lower the humidity. Paints dries faster when it warm. So hopefully by now the only smell left is in Glocknut's uh hmm restroom!

Glocknut? Got any nosehairs left?

Maybe the primer was not compatible w/ the finish coat? If you were getting a buzz, then you had not enough ventilation...

It still stinks. Heat seems to make the smell even worse. The air is sooo humid... because its about 30' from the creek. I'll give the A/C idea a try.

I think the small size of the cabin adds additional difficulty to getting rid of the smell? I poured 4 large boxes of baking soda out on the floor. Baking soda did wonders when i put down linoleum tiles on the floor in my former quarry shack. I couldn't get rid of a plastic smell from the linoleum. It did the trick on that but isn't working on this very well.

A/C works wonders on humidity. And smells don't seem to carry as well in colder air.

I read somewhere than putting out pans of white vinegar will help too. Can't vouch for it personally, though.

Sometimes you just have to wait it out. I painted our bathroom a few months ago, and it took probably a week for the paint smell to clear out completely.

I'll try that. That could work.

Sheesh... and the door was probably open the whole time too. I only keep the door open durning my workday.. 8 hours every day. I run the fan also. I swept up the baking soda today though.
Its died down a little bit its still pretty strong. Maybe i just have to get rid of the paint smell by moving in...breathing all the vapors and absorbing it all into my bloodstream....

I found a $20 cheapie air purifier at wallyworld that is supposed to remove cigarette smells from the air. It has a "activated carbon prefilter".... It has done more in the last 2 hours than the fans, baking soda, and vinegar has done all week. I might just be able to move in sometime tomorrow...maybe?
The little air conditioner i bought at wallworld has a thermostat that goes all the way down to 60 degrees Ferenheight(sp)? I love it chilly.... 65 is comfordable.... 60 degrees i sleep like a baby. I can tolerate it down to 50 degrees with heavy blankets. Below that i have to resort to electric blankets. Winter before last i didn't even run heat at all in my old quarry shack. Between the stove, fridge, elec blanket i stayed warm enough. I love the cold.....

Chase a skunk through the house; the paint smell will no longer be noticeable.

Update...

It still stinks. Fred didn't believe me when i told him the other day so we walked back there towards the building...we got about 15 foot from it and he said he could smell it from the outside! I thought i was the only one with sensative sense of smell....

I'm beginning to believe maybe there was something to the idea that the primer may not have been compatible with the regular paint. The primer is Sherwin Williams Latex primer sealer indoor/outdoor and the 2 coats of regular paint are Benjamin Moore.... white boy white...

Seriously though...i now have 2 purifiers in there with active carbon prefilters as well as the AC also having a carbon prefilter in it as well. I also added a De-Humidifier to the room as well.

My next steps will be to find a number for Benjamin Moore paint and give them a call for advice.
Another idea...and this is gonna sound nutty... but the idea of taking a spray bottle with water in it and spraying a section of wall with water mist and then powdering that section down with baking soda so it will stick. Baking soda can do amazing things if it is in close proximity or in direct contact with an oderous substance. Leaving it on the floor was not sufficinet the first time arround.

I haven't tried staying in the building yet. But the smell bothers both my chest and my eyes. Something just ain't right with it. I'm still running the fan with the doors open during the days for about 8 hrs every day. I'm getting frustrated......

Yes, call Benjamin Moore. The smell should have gone away by now.
