PAC: National Handgun Control Voter Education Fund Membership: 250,000 dues-paying members. HCI claims 1,000,000+ members, but this includes contacts by interested parties by any means. HCI originated (1974) as the National Council to Control Handguns (NCCH), a group which lobbied for government restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms through support for restrictions on the manufacture, importation, sale, transfer, and civilian possession of handguns. The organization voiced a desire for an eventual handgun ban through gradual steps, but changed its name and espoused goals due to results of a survey. In 1991, HCI amended its Articles of Incorporation to reflect its support of restrictions on rifles and shotguns as well. The Legal Action Project: http://www.gunlawsuits.com Since 1989, the Legal Action Project has made sure gun violence victims have their day in court. LAPs attorneys provide free legal representation for victims in lawsuits against reckless gun manufacturers, dealers and owners. The LAP now represents more than twenty cities and counties who are suing the gun industry to force them to make and distribute their products more responsibly, and is widely acknowledged as the most powerful legal adversary of the American gun industry. The Law Enforcement Relations: http://www.handguncontrol.org/ler/index.asp The Law Enforcement Relations Department works with law enforcement throughout the country, implementing programs to reduce gun violence in schools and communities. LER also develops strategies to interdict guns and reduce the number of illegal guns on the street. LER also works to pass federal and state legislation to reduce gun violence. Rommelvon,
Right on! Generally speaking, gun owners do nothing in the fight for our gun rights.

Here's a little note I sent to other Virginia lawyers recently:
----- I was just reading over a list of gun-hostile businesses at the Virginia Citizens' Defense League, Inc. website, http://www.vcdl.org/static/gue.html and it occurred to me to wonder whether anyone's suing any such businesses regarding injuries suffered at the hands of third-party assailants. I realize that some folks won't like my thinking in this area, but if I were litigating such a case, I'd say that a policy that unnecessarily restricted the ability of persons otherwise lawfully in possession of firearms from acting in self-defense and/or defense of others in such an emergency is legal malice, and evidence that the business negligently interfered with the ability of persons present to prevent or ameliorate the injuries suffered. I'm thinking it might be a basis for an award of punitive damages, especially in light of a failure of the business to implement any method of making up for the lack. I'd argue, further, that such a policy requires implementation of policies and procedures to actually keep consumers safe while engaged in transactions in the business' premises. Such a business makes itself totally responsible as an absolute insurer of consumers' safety (not just in terms of a duty towards business invitees), if it takes steps to preclude the ability of otherwise law-abiding consumers to protect themselves and others. By the way, law enforcement personnel are not exempt from the trespassing statute unless they act pursuant to an emergency, crime in progress, or a warrant. So law-enforcement officers aren't allowed to carry guns in Manassas Mall, while shopping, any more than you are, and violation of the posted "no trespassing" policy is just as much a class-1 misdemeanor for them as for us. I'm thinking of the scene in "Bronco Billy" in which Clint Eastwood interrupts a bank robbery. I'm not shopping in any business in which Bronco Billy wouldn't be allowed to carry his gun (assuming a lawfully issued concealed carry permit). |

WOW, Huge List!
I suggest they also include all the Hollwierds themselves on "no guns"! No more guts & gore gun movies or actors......see how fast they get their butts off the list if they were no longer able to make millions of the "shot em up" movies! Lilly:0 |

I have a large insurance company to add to your list. I worked in management for Allstate Insurance Company for nearly 13 years. Each year Allstate's Home Office in Northbrook, IL., would send out a letter to all 60,000 employees asking each employee to write to their representatives in Govornment. Each letter was personalized with the name and mailing information for the Senator, Congressman, etc for each individual employee. The company had several topics that they asked us to write about. Most of the topics had to do with Insurance regulations and laws, but they always included a topic on gun control. Home office gave some rediculous statistic about how many children are killed by guns in homes each year, and how much it costs the insurance industry in medical bills, liability lawsuits, etc. Allstate asked that every employee write their representative and ask for a laundry list of firearm restrictions and bans.
Being a member of management, I thought I might have some pull. Ha! I was slapped down like a fly at a picnic. I contacted a few people in Home Office to find out who was in charge of this anti-gun crap, and I was told that gun control is a key objective of the company's senior leaders. Basically they told me to keep my mouth shut if I knew what was good for me. Allstate is this Nations 2nd largest insurance company, and they insure one out of every 5 vehicles on the road today. They ban guns on all company property. Conceal/Carry license holders may not even have a gun in their personal vehicle in the parking lot. If you have Allstate Insurance, you are giving them the funds to pursue their anti-gun agenda. Allstate treated me very well, and it is a great company to work for. They handle customer claims very quickly, and they pay claims fairly. They are just ANTI-GUN, and that negative fact alone cancels out all of the good in my eyes. Some years ago they banned self loading rifles in the UK, we handed them in.
Later they banned handguns, we handed them in. Next they decided no magazine shotgun should contain more than two cartridges. Most recenty they banned blank fire guns and 'realistic' plastic BB guns, it's true. Its insane but true. If you dont fight for your gun rights they will go. I have seen it happen.

In the UK we are not allowed to carry any knife with a blade over 3", that may not sound too bad until I add that it cannot be a locking knife. You know, the safe kind. Also knives cannot be sold to any one under 18. The reason for this is knife crime. It is true that we do seem to have a youth knife culture here in the UK, but I believe the antis aggrivate the problem. Ban anything and to some you it give a desirability it diddnt have before. It's an old story, blame the object not the criminal. I once did a cartoon for a magazine with a dead stab victim and two police officers. One of the officers is holding up the knife saying 'If it wasnt for this he would still be alive'. Never mind that you can kill someone with half a brick! ![]() I see your Cajun for life. Do I have some memory of reading about Cajuns being from the French people who were thrown out of western Canada by the British, then re locating to the southern US? And what the heck is a 'grit'?

There is a reason a crimimal is called a crimimal. It's because he commits a crime. The cajuns were French loyalist in eastern Canada who were sent into exile by England and setteled in south Louisiana. There are a few (very) around here who wanted an apology from England.I think England has apologize. In a crosseyed way of looking at it , you could say that England is responsiable for crawfish, cajun music and Tabasco Sauce. ![]() Grit: 1 - Rough particals, as of sand. 2 - coarsely ground boiled hominy (corn). Hey guys, that is one whopper "list" that we should all be paying attention.
I believe the legal gun owners could make a big difference in anything we set out to do if we are sincere and have a plan that EVERYONE participated. 80 million plus people working on a single agenda would overshadow the "list" me thinks. But one other that IMHO should be on this list and I did not see it. If it is there, then it will not hurt to single them out for this awareness. AARP is probably the most dangerous of all listed and they are the founders and supporters of some of the biggest names on your "list". I did not believe it when first I was made aware of their stand on the second amendment and your gun rights, so I wrote them a letter. I now take their reply to me to every CCW, Instructor and Counselor workshop that I host and show it to all participants. These people will tell you and put it in print they do not believe you have a "right" to own or carry. They do not believe you have the "right" to defend yourself. And they work very hard to have ALL guns removed from the private ownership and they do not make any exceptions for caliber, length or type. If it is a gun it should not be in your hands, home etc. PERIOD If I was computer literate I would fire up my scanner and scan the letter and share it with all but I am not and I regret not being able to do so. Another thing all of you who are interested in and work hard on your self defense. I have been involved in a violent encounter and survived. I can tell you from personal experience and from studying the after effects on this type of situation on other people just like you and I. If you have this happen and survive you will need every kind of support you can find and then some. Most important of all is or will be your religion. Please take the time before it is too late to KNOW the position your religion takes on YOU defending yourself and your loved ones. there is one in particular very popular christian religion that does NOT believe you should defend yourself if it means taking the life of another person. I found out too late and the hard way. But fortunately for me I had a wonderful family and friends to take up the slack. Good luck and I believe this is a great topic. UncleFudd |

My four daughters are all GRITS, Tranter.
Girls Raised In The South - G.R.I.T.S. All of them but the oldest love to eat grits. (Hominy grits, that is.) The oldest doesn't like them because she was fed a LOT of nasty, ill-prepared grits when she was in preschool. |

Let's be fair. Liberals get blamed for a lot of things, but if you look at that list you provided, very closely, you will see a lot of top CEO who are ultra conservative, and there are other conservative groups listed. I would like to approach this problem of gun owners from the middle of the road. I think there are many liberals (however you describe them) that have guns and want to keep them according to the 2nd amendment. Let's not point fingers at general groups of people, but let's identify who they are either liberal or conservative and go after them. There has got to be some room for compromise, and let's not alienate any support we might have.

I am new to giving my two cents and the idea of debating. Please let me know what you think about my comments. My goal is to refine my thoughts on the matter and to become better educated with this issue.
What does banning do? Banning simply covers a problem up. The problem in the US and in other countries is not that their are to many guns or not enough of them. The real problem is that their is to much poverty and ignorance and not enough educational supports. "In 2006, 17.4 percent of children in America lived below the poverty line, substantially more than in 1969. And even this measure probably understates the true depth of many children’s misery." http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/18/op...18krugman.html I would imagine that the poverty level going into the new year, 2009, will greatly increase. My way of thinking suggest that when some people loose everything that they had worked for their entire life they do irrational things. Some people may think that the only way to acquire the money they need for their family is to obtain it illegally. Displaying a firearms during the illegal activity only improves their chances of bringing the money home to the family. The criminal in this senario is still a criminal in the eyes of the law if he or she had used a knife, or no weapon at all. Martha Stewart didn't use a weapon and she went to jail. Not only did she go to jail, but unlike most criminals she found a job after her incarceration really quickly. It seems to me that the government is more concerned these days with keeping poorly managed buisnesses in business, while at the same time making it more difficult for not so big business's to seize an opertunity to rise up the business later to take over the poorly managed business. Let me make an a** out of you and me by assuming that their are a great deal more families in poverty that work for smaller companies than their are people who work for the poorly managed banks, car dealer ships, and so on. I will also assume that many of the people who work for these poorly run business's would have the ability to rebound more quickly than someone who is in poverty. Maybe their would be fewer Americans in poverty in the long run if the Government would keep their hands out of it. The government has a place and their place is not bailing out troubled companies. The issue is not the guns! What causes people to use the guns in a criminal manner? This is the issue. Many of these "criminals" have been left behind their entire life. They did poorly in school, they came from a family that didn't support them or couldn't support them, they might have learning disability, mental disabilities, and or addictions. Many never learned how to be responsible citizens of this great country or other countries. Some I would suspect love the attention they receive when they pull their gun out right before they rob a store or jack a car. This is probably the only time they receive attention. If they didn't pull the gun out no one would pay any attention to them. They might even say to themself, "hey what's the worst that could happen? They will just put me in jail." I'm not saying that jail is a good place to be, but for some people the accomadations are probably better than their home, if they even have a home. I would be curious to find a graph that shows the amount of gun violence over the years compared to the poverty level. My hypothesis is that they would be indirectly proportional to each other. For some reason people believe that making a new law fixes everything that is broken. The fact of the matter is that making a law only creates a new criminal and hides the problem. Its like when we where kids playing basketball. Their was someone who was always picked last or told to sit this game out. The reason was that this kid couldn't play ball. No doubt it probably made him feel bad. Not allowing this kid to play further separted our abilities from his. We became better basketball players while he never improved. It seems that in our society we make more laws that bench people than we make laws that give every opportunity to improve the skills and abilities of people who may not have development to their full potential in certain areas. To use the basketball scenario again, let say a teacher walked over to the court and asked why isn't "Jimmy playing ball?" We reply "he has poor skills." Instead of the teacher telling us that we need to let Jimmy play with us and that we need to teach him how to play, the teacher bans everyone from playing basketball. We need to pass more laws that help those in need of education and to explain to them why violent act are not the way. Can everyone be saved? No! But, many of them can gain the skills needed to live a non-violent life. I feel that many of those who are anti-gun are fighting for a great cause but are targeting the wrong people. Responsible gun owners are all for a society where guns are not used on other people and criminals say "please" instead of shooting and then taking the goods. We need more Martha Stewards in this world. Lastly, why is it so difficult to find good statistics for these issues. If anyone has good resources I would love to know about them. I have always been a gun owner and hunter, but have always let other people fight the battle for me. I now feel up to the challenge. |

Years ago, someone pointed out that there was a master database showing names and addresses of the pro-gun population which included gun-owners.... The upshot is that this database will be consulted to find out who to watch and whose guns to seize.
I hope the NRA has a way to erase (accidently, of course) their membership lists when the stormtroopers (I mean the ATF) comes shouting and knocking Regards citydesk175 Last edited by citydesk175; 01-16-2009 at 09:29 PM.. |
