IJ Target Sealed 8's were made from 1931 to 1957. Keep checking back....our resident expert on IJ's, Bill Goforth will be along shortly and can probably give you the year of manufacture.
Blue Book value: Iver Johnson Target Sealed 8: 98% - $100 95% - $95 90% - $80 80% - $75 |

as xracer said the iver johnson 'target sealed 8' was manufactured between 1932 and 1954. it was replaced in march of 1955 with the model 55. same basic mechanism only updated a little and with a more angular frame.
serial number N31337 was manufactured about 1953. i have to say about because i have no post wwII serial number records on this model and have to base my opinion on actual revolver studied and known production capabilities of iver johnson after WWII. it would help in my continuing research of iver johnson handguns to know the type of hammer spring your revolver has, a single flat leaf spring or a coil spring? if you could help me out with this i would very much appreciate it. bill

I hope somebody is still checking this forum. I have one of these pistols my grandfather gave to me about 20 years ago. He got it in trade from an old native american woman who used it to shoot snakes on a reservation. Mine has a serial # of N33814 and I've kept it in excellent condition. The handle was really worn so I sanded it down and re-stained it. Don't know if it's worth anything but I'd love to know more about the history of the gun.

How about serial number 2396? I received this gun from my father on my 14th birthday, which was a very long time ago. Also, are these guns worth repairing, aside from personal reasons? Were they considered decent firearms in their day?

If you're still there, welcome and your Target Sealed 8 sn N24116 was made in 1952. There were several different sights used on the late Sealed 8's and suggest you call Numrich's customer service and describe the type yours has or had: http://www.gunpartscorp.com/ContactUs.aspx |

Thank you for the info. Does anyone know where I can get my sealed 8 re-gripped or buy a new one? The pistol has been fired so much that a hole has been wore into the leather grip just below the hammer. I have spoken with a couple of gunsmiths that quoted me some outrageous prices. I am torn between putting a new grip on the pistol and what it will do to affect the value as this thing is in beautiful condition. Thanks for all of your help.

I stand corrected, it is wood, I never looked that closely at it and figured it was leather due to the worn hole (see attached image). I will check out the listing, Thanks again.

I received an Iver Johnson Mod 55, serial #H6987. Gun appears to be in excellent shape. What year was this gun made? It has a pull pin cylinder release. Do I need to remove the 8-shot cylinder to load/reload? Is it safe to shoot 22LR 1280 FPS 36GR Plated Hollow Point cartridges in this gun? Thanks for you help.

There is no serial number chart for the Model 55 but H prefix dates 1958-1974 period. With photos and a listing of all markings and where marked it might be possible to narrow the period as there were several variations. It can be loaded and unloaded via the slot on right side without removing the cylinder. Any current .22LR ammo should be safe. |

I'm very glad to have found this forum and being new here I just want to say hello. So Hello all! Ok now down to business, I have just acquired an Iver Johnson Target Sealed 8 .22 revolver. Until I figure out how to put a picture up on here I'll just have to describe it as best as I can. Grip- slips on from the bottom up with a bottom screw, walnut checkered (in a 2 inch by 1 inch diamond shape) Hammer- single action spring intact Frame- has 95% bluing, perhaps 92% Cylinder- 8 shot, has very sharp edges on the ratchet, also has wear ring around the outside of the cylinder. Trigger- has vertical serrations for grip- not blued. Barrel is a 6 inch octagon with a fixed front half round blade, top of barrel reads " I. J. A. & C. W. FITCHBURG MASS. U.S.A. left side of barrel (revolver pointing down range) reads I J TARGET SEALED 8. Top of frame as your looking down onto it has a different matte finish (probably meant to keep down glare) the serial number on bottom of trigger guard matches the number on the inside of the handle (M11545) Looking for a possible age, I have been told it is post WWII however with the octagon barrel I am doubting that. It is possible someone put an octagon barrel on this gun to make it look older but I do not know why anyone would go through that trouble.
