I came across a 220 swift chambered shilen barrel today. Fellas didn't know why he had it or where it came from. It was wrapped in plastic and appears brand new. I'm no expert but it looks like it may fit a remington action. My question is...which remington action. If I were to buy a used rifle to re-barrel, what should I get?

Is the barrel threaded? If so, what is the tpi and pitch? That's the only way to know if it will fit a 700 receiver. My guess would be a mauser since they are more popular to rebarrel.

Well, I don't have a thread gauge...that I can find
wife...The barrel was given to me so I'm in no hurry. I had a thread here somewhere about building a rifle or "assembling" a rifle. This is something that I'd like to do and am tron between cartdiges. The 220 Swift was a thought and I may run with it ![]() . The other post was leaning towards the 20 Tactical![]() .If I were to go with the 220 Swift, what action would I need and where would be the best place to shop? Under $600 - I can't afford Panda or BAT or Sako or so on and so on. The 700 or maybe a CZ from Midway? Is there someething or some place I have over looked? Thanks very much.

Look for surplus mauser 98's, specially the large ring varient. Also I believe it is Check M24's, but don't hold me to that model number.
I had a 98 mauser (large ring) built up to a .257 Roberts Ackley Improved with a Shilen 27 inch match grade, air guaged barrel. With the extra barrel length I can push bullets as fast as a 25-06 with about 3 grains less powder.

I have a rifle built on a '98 Mauser chambered for .240 Cobra. It's a .220 Swift case necked up to 6mm. The combo works great.

There's 4 or 5 Mauser rifles at my local shop. All of them are under $300 and are all different calibers of which I cannot remember. I do believe one is 8mm and the others are 6.5 x ? variant. Which caliber would I want to purchase...then again...they might not be '98s. I am Mauser ignorant. Help?

Hi Justdoug,
If you want to build the rifle yourself, you might want to look at a Savage Action. It might be easier to just buy the whole rifle. Replace the barrel and stock when you get the time. Since your barrel is a 22 caliber, you need to figure out exactly what caliber you want. 22/250, 22 BR, 22 Cheata, 22/6mm Texas Throphy Hunter? If you are looking for long barrel life and top notch accuracy, look at the 22 BR. If you want a commerical cartridge, get a 22/250. The reason I say go with a Savage is you can change the barrels yourself. You can buy barrels already threaded and chambered for $259 from E Arthur Brown on line. You might need to cut off the threaded portion of your barrel off and have it rethreaded and chambered to the 22 caliber of your choice. Without seeing what threads you have, it's hard to tell what action it is threaded for? Even if you know what action, it might still not head-space on your new action. Savage actions don't head-space on the shoulder like most other rifles. They head-space on the barrel nut. If you want to change the barrels yourself, I'd go with the Savage. If you only want one rifle for youe barrel, almost any action will work. Catch you later, The Big Dog |
