How long can I keep my magazines loaded? - The Firearms Forum

I am making the switch from a revolver to auto and am concerned that if I keep my pistol loaded all the time for self defense that the mag springs won't function when I need them. Assuming that I use gov issue or better 7 round mags, is this a viable concern? Would I need to switch mags every month or so? I have read/heard different things and I am confused

With newer, high-quality magazines that should not be a concern. However, some of us old-school types still rotate our mags each month out of habit.

A couple of years ago, while cleaning out some stuff in the garage, I found an old fishing tackle box that I kept small gun parts in. In it was also a fully loaded GI M1911 magazine. Thing must've been in there for 20 years.....and it still worked fine.

That having been said, I still like to give 'em a rest after a month or so.
