Default Opinion on Colt's Bouble Eagle

Reply Opinion on Colt's Double Eagle
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently talked myself into picking up a new pistol to use in addition to my 1911 A1 cheapo I bought last year. I looked all over the place and placed several calls sent out several emails coming close to HK and Desert Eagle, but decided against it in the end.

Then one of my contacts called me today with a nickel finished Double Eagle. I went and had a look, and it's showing extremely little wear, but after a little research, looks like they quit making them a few years ago. Did they quit making them for a notorious reason, or simply didn't sell as well as the 1911s? Could this be a collectors piece that I should be interested in? I've asked around a little bit, but most of my guys have no input on the double action colt.

Thanks in advance.

You sure its not stainless?

Anyway, the Double Eagle was a gun Colt never should have made. Good example of the marketing guys overriding the R&D guys. The DA mechanism is somewhat fragile, and the public was put off by its looks.

Sold miserably.

Having said all that, there is a collector's market for ANYTHING discontinued by Colt. I have a Double Eagle new-in-the-box about to hit the auction later today.

Gotta disagree with ya on the part about the double
action of it Doc, I've carried mine for quite a few
years now and depended on it in my last LEO job,
the trigger mech is fine even under stress but it
is true that it didn't sell well because Colt's devoted
following didn't like it because it didn't quite look like
exactly like a 1911, but as far as I'm concern and I own
a few different Colt's, I have depended and still do every
day on my Colt Double Eagle Compact Officers Model, I
use only Wilson 8-rd. mags and all my Colt Mags have
been converted to Wilson springs & followers for all
of my 1911's.

The double Eagle is one of the most accurate and reliable
pistols I have ever fired and of all my pistols this one is
the one I have full confidence in and it has never failed,
I guess it is my favorite but also one hell of a work horse
too, it's a shame they stopped production but I'm glad I
got mine before they did.

They sure do have collective value, especially if it's a
first edition but to me it's worth it's weight in gold for
the way it delivers.

It a full-size, new-in-the-box. Probably start it at $700.
