Member Posts: 2 (4/16/02 2:37:57 am) Reply What is a 1911? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, so i know nothing about guns, this may sound like the dumbest question in the world, but i really want to know. I have been reading about handguns the last couple weeks and i have seen people talk about the legendary 1911 a million times already. Its mentioned more than any other gun, yet i have no clue what it actually is. What is the 1911 and what makes it so special? How is it different from other guns? Marauder Shreddin warpig883 *TFF Staff* Posts: 3144 (4/16/02 9:19:06 am) Reply Re: What is a 1911? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That is a question with many answers. let me see if I can sum it up. In the late 1800's and early 1900's John Browning was designing some of the worlds first semi automatic handguns. One of these designs was adopted by the US military in 1911. It was manufactured by Colt and has always been known as the Colt 1911. The caliber is .45 ACP (automatic colt pistol) and there are many variations of it now being made by many different companies. The 1911 is the standard by which all other semiautomatic pistols are judged. It fits the hand great and points like and extension of your finger. It is reliable and powerful with many after market performance part available. Go to the competition shooting forum and ask some of these guys about their race guns and the kind of groups they shoot. It served the US military thru 4 wars and its replacement with the Beretta 92 9mm has been a source of controversy since the early 90's. Sorry in advance for the newbie question, but what is a race gun? Thanks, Jay warpig883 *TFF Staff* Posts: 3162 (4/16/02 8:10:49 pm) Reply Re: What is a 1911? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome Jay Feel free to ask any question ya please. A race gun is a term used to describe a gun used for competition shooting that has been fine tuned and souped up with custom made or after market goodies to make it shoot VERY VERY good. JayNRaleigh1 Member Posts: 2 (4/16/02 8:30:18 pm) Reply Re: What is a 1911? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for the reply! If I wanted a 1911 with a compensator, what's the best way to go? Do any of the manufacturer's offer that option, or do you pretty much have to get a gunsmith to do it? I'm in Raleigh, NC if anyone knows of any local place to have it done. For the new folks like someone said here, welcome aboard. You will find some of the nicest folks at this forum. If you're wanting a 1911 with a comp, there are gunsmiths that can help you with that.If you already have a 1911,Bill Wilson at Wilson's Combat makes a nice little comp that takes the place of the factory barrel bushing. It's pretty simple to install. It might help ya some with recoil if that's the concern.I think the site address for Bill is, www.wilsoncombat.com Hope you enjoy it here, take care bg Cloudbreak Member Posts: 9 (4/17/02 3:58:25 am) Reply Re: What is a 1911? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for the link, awesome website to explore Marauder Shreddin shooter45 us *TFF Chief Of Staff* Posts: 1431 (4/17/02 3:05:14 pm) Reply Re: What is a 1911? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jay and Cloudbreak, welcome to the forum. Nice to see your '11 still has the original diamond grips. I have one identical to yours.....made in Sept., 1918. Also have a WWI holster, web belt, magazine pouches, and several half-blued magazines. rishPJM Member Posts: 2 (5/7/02 7:08:20 pm) Reply Re: What is a 1911? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- my frame is a 1914 springfield, the story behind my 11 is that it was taken from a Jap by a Lt Col. when they liberated a prisoner of war camp, on one of the islands in the pacific, the Lt Col gave it to a man that I got it from (Manila maybe ?, not sure). I got it all apart in a plastic bag with a light layer of rust on everything,,,,,,and all for only 150.00,,,,,,I`m happy....PJ, irishPJM Member Posts: 3 (5/7/02 7:09:47 pm) Reply Re: What is a 1911? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SORRY,,, Thanks for the warm welcome....PJ
