Winchester Model 1890 - 22 Short - The Firearms Forum

I am considering purchasing a Winchester 1890 chambered in 22 short. Serial number is 358872, with the letter A underneath the serial number.
The rifle is in excellent condition. I would appreciate any information you can share with me regarding an approximate value. Obviously, I do not want to pay too much.

Well.....sounds like an "oldie but a goody"!

#358872 was manufactured in 1908. Many, if not most, of the 1890s made in .22 short were used as "gallery guns" in shooting galleries at amusment parks, etc. Yours, being in excellent condition, obviously was not. Actual gallery guns were used hard and are usually found in "very used" condition.

98% - $2,750
95% - $1,800
90% - $1,100
80% - $750

NOTE: As you can see from the prices, 1890's in "Excellent Condition" are quite rare, pricy & collectable. If you're thinking of buying this gun, make sure that it's in "Excellent Original Condition" and hasn't been refinished.

I have a Winchester model 57 that I bought in 1943, chambered for the .22 short. Excellent shooter, but during WW2 .22 short ammunition was very scarce. On advice of a gunsmith I wrote to Winchester asking about rechambering the rifle to .22 long rifle. Winchester replied that for accuracy, the .22 short cartridge required a rifled barrel with one turn in 20 inches but the .22 long rifle required rifling with 1 turn in 16 inches. They strongly advised against rechambering. That Model 57 has always been an excellent little squirrel rifle, and all my grandchildren started hunting with it. The squirrels don't seem to be disturbed by the sound of the short cartridge, but hide when they hear the crack of the long rifle cartridge.

My uncle gave me a winchester 1889 model 02-22 short rifle but when he gave it to me it had the barrel and the stock shorten. I want to know whats the value of the rifle even do it is not in regular condition, can any one help i will truly appreciate it.

I have two (1 Model 1890 and a Model 90). They are both great shooters. The 90 has a 1906 stock on it as I think the original got broke sometime when my my Grand dad had it. He more than likely had the 1906 stock put on.
