I have a H & R Arms 22 Pistol, 7 shot, with a 9" barrel. It is marked on top with "HUNTER MODEL" the S/N is 128676. I'm looking for any info on this gun. Was it a safe gun to use, is there any specs I can get, and when was it made.

the hunter model chambered for 7 22 rimfire cartridges was manufactured between 1925 and 1929. for now this is the only dating i can give you. as they are serial number is the same range as the model 1906.
i believe if you measure your barrel from the muzzle to the fron of the cylinder it will be 10 inches, which was the standard barrel length of the hunter model. the hunter and the trapper (6 inch barrel) were variation of the H&R model 1906 double action revolver. after 1929 a large frame hunter model with 10 inch barrel was introduced based on the model 922 and was chambered for 9 round of 22 rimfire cartridges. bill

H&R did not manufacture a 22 rimfire semi-auto with a clip. so i assume you are refering to a 7 round cylinder of a revolver. starting as early as 1883 H&R usually marked a model name on their revolvers. how is this one marked?

H&R used the M letter code in 1952. which would make this revolver a first model seventh variation, the last year for this model. a new frame was introduced in 1953.

First Variation 1927-1930 serial number range 119600*-145000*(estimate) Second Variation 1931 DIFFERENCE: new grip shape (saw handle shape eliminated) serial number range 145000*-160000*(estimate) Third Variation 1932-1937 DIFFERENCE: new safety cylinder, serial number range 160000*-171000*(estimate) Fourth Variation 1938-1939 DIFFERENCE; new grip frame and round barrel, serial number range 171000*-192000*(estimate) Fifth Variation 1940- 1947 DIFFERENCE; same as 4th variation except letter code prefix to serial number A thru H Sixth Variation 1948-1949 DIFFERENCE; a new barrel length, serial number letter codes I and J Seventh Variation 1949-1952 DIFFERENCE; all-in-one cartridge extraction system, serial number letter codes J thru M Eight Variation 1952 models for M922 Camper and M922 Bantam weight (see post 1953 models) VALUE: 100%=$195 60%=$55 add 40% premium for 1st Variation and 20% premium for 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Variations bill

Thank you so much for the information. I'm not sure about the "all-in-one cartridge extraction system" you mentioned. It has a pin that holds the cylinder and it appears to be what is used to eject used cartridges unless something is missing. Based on the fit of the cylinder in the frame, I don't see any room for much that might fit on the cylinder that could eject the shells. Assuming everything is in place, is it typically safe to shoot a gun this age? I'm also not sure about the type of 22 shell to use. Would it be short or long rifle? I took a long rifle and it fits in the chamber but not sure the gun is designed to handle the extra "umph".
Thanks, |

the all in one extractor is built into the the cylinder. after removing the cylinder you then use the center pin to push all the fired cases out in one stroke of the center pin.
stay with 22 long rifle standard velocity or hi-speed ammo do not use any of the modern hyper velociity ammo. bill

That is soooo cool. I never saw the break in the metal so the middle of the cylinder could push out the back. It is amazing what you can find out when you Google things. Praise the Lord, I came across your thread. I greatly appreciate you sharing your wealth of knowledge with me. It is very kind of you. Thank you and God bless!

What can you tell me about my recent find? it's an H&R Model 922. Other than the company name, model number and Worcester, Mass. USA, the only other marks on the piece are "P 801" on the butt of the frame.
Thanks, Kath |

Mara,
We have to start somewhere: Does your gun look like the one pictured below?
