Question 1980 Remington 742 30 06

My Father purchased this new in 1980 and used it maybe six times. The last time it was touched was when they moved 18 years ago. I have offered to do some leg work for him, but I have minimal knowledge of rifles. Question, how do es he determine its value and what is the best venue for him to sell? Btw, the 742 is in good as new condition.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Oppy.....welcome to TFF.

We can give you a "ballpark" estimate of it's value here, but we need to know which model & grade of the 742 you have. ADL? ADL DeLuxe? BDL? BDL DeLuxe? Peerless Grade? Premium Grade? Any engraving? Type of checkering?

If you could post some pix....full length, right & left sides, and closeups of any engraving, it would sure help.

Gave $300 for this 742CDL .... It is very clean, rate it 85 - 90% and I consider $300 very fair. Blue Book of Gun Values is a decent source, or search some of the on-line gun auctions. Some local shops will help you ... all should!

The 742 received some bad press as some (or, some users) had trouble with internal receiver metal. Gotta keep an autoloader especially clean and lubed appropriately. Mine has about 1000 rounds through it. My brother has one he has used for decades and guesses 4000 - 5000 rounds (my guess is 1500 - 2000). Both functioning great.
