Some of you mught already know this but here it is anyhow. Well as you all know gravity pulls down. So if you are trying to get your recticle straight, tie a piece of yarn to a bottle of water. Let it hang down. Because of the laws of gravity it is gauranteed that it will hang perfectly straight. So you can align your recticle with the yarn.

So long as you hold the rifle bore directly under the center of the scope while you do this it works fine.

How's this...

Set your rifle in a gun vise or other padded holding device. Place a small spirit level across the scope base and level. Mount rings and place scope in rings. Place spirit level across top turret of scope. Once that is reading level, your reticle must be straight.
