Hammer forward or hammer back safty on. I'll be carring it unconcelled and mostly camping or hiking. If simply for camping and such, I'd advise loaded mag, chamber when needed until at least until you get a bit more info on C&L. That's the way the 1911 is designed to be carried. That being said, make sure you have plenty of experience (shooting and handling) before you carry that way. JMHO. If you're not too experienced with M1911-type firearms, I'd go with Tac's suggestion of a "chamber empty-hammer down" carry in a holster with a strap. If you're an experienced '11 user, I see no problem with C&L carry.....if you have a proper C&L holster. A C&L holster has a hold-down strap or snap between the hammer and the rear of the slide. Also, for hiking/trail carry, I prefer a holster with no trigger cutout. boomatic V.I.P.
