The coyote kill figures for Wyoming example 2007. Federal Agents killed 10,470 coyotes. Private hunters and trappers about the same number total kill over 20,000 for calander 2007. Wyoming has increased its budget for coyote control by 6 million dollars.

I think personally if I wanted to attract coyotes, a pile of dead invaders entering the US through our southern border would do the job. Wait til they're good'n full that way they move slower and easier to take out.

Redwing is right on with his figures for Wyoming. In 2004 the Wyoming legislature put 8 million total into coyote control. Most of the Federally killed coyotes are aerial gunned or trapped. Some counties have bounties on coyotes paid for with some of the money the legislature put into the program. The coyote numbers have really went down as a result. Piror to the new money I was taking 30 - 70 coyotes each year trapping and calling. After the increase my numbers have been around 10 - 30.

As for attracting coyotes my best luck has always been around dead animals. Where ever farmers or ranchers drag dead livestock are excellent areas to look for coyotes. One tip off I use is when all the magpies or crows are in the trees or circling a dead carcass is a tip off Mr. Coyote in on the carcass.

Whip its good to see we agree on something. I hope you have noticed the move to close the P-Dog shooting in the Great Thunder Basin Grass Lands this winter and beyond. The excuse is to protect endangered species which depend on dogs for food and shelter. These being Burrowing Owles, eagles, hawks, ferrets etc. This will soon extend to control of Dog shooting on all private and public lands. I think a shooting season on P-Dogs by the state of Wyoming could have headed this off. The Feds are a real danger to hunting rights.

Good grief. I bet the enviro-loony who dreamed up the idea of banning prairie dog hunting in Great Thunder Basin Grasslands has never taken a step off pavement.

Have you seen any wolves in the area of Western Wyoming where you are living?

Be careful not to wound a second one (this will cause the pack to scatter), therefore your aim must be for sudden kill shots. I have taken out some rather large packs with this method, if metal jaw traps are not legal in your area, snares made from plastic coated metal cable works well to. Hope this helps you out a little although I am from the bootheel of Missouri and have frequently been called a "Redneck". I'm fixing to rid a pack that recently decided to take up residence on my 22 acres.
Too bad nobody ever taught you ethics when they taught you how to kill. There is a difference between a "Redneck" and poor uneducated white trash. Rednecks are working men who use their hands to earn an honest living and usually have a great respect for the land and for the animals they hunt. Most rednecks were taught hunting ethics by their fathers before they were even old enough to hold a gun.
You sir, do meet the definition of a Redneck. You do not value the life of the animal you hunt, and you are lacking even the slightest bit of ethics in your killing methods and destruction of natural resources. If you have no ethics, no core values, and no respect for nature, then you are nothing more than trash who will create nothing and be remembered in death for a single day as such.

Best yote attractor Ive used is an empty nasal spray bottle. Just sit there in the grass and squeeze it. Itll make a faint whistling noise and you will wonder WTF, this aint gonna call a coyote. but it drives them crazy. it mimics a rodent cry, which is prime yote fodder.

some of the pro varmint hunters call it finesse calling. I call it and economical device that plain works.

I have had windy days where a wobbling decoy wont even bring them in, but that dang bottle gets em every time. theyll hone in on it and will head right for your lap.

If I may revive this thread, we've been having coyote issues in my neck of the woods (SC). There aren't too many of them where I'm at, maybe 6 or 7, but they've been too close for comfort considering I and a couple neighbors are pretty much the only ones left in this part of town that have dense woods for the coyotes to live in, so they're rather concentrated (100 acres roughly?) They've been here and there throughout the years, but in the last two years they've been getting bad. The wildlife around here has dropped like a rock. We have outside animals, and so do my neighbors, who have both lost many chickens over the last year, and we even had a dog go missing, not to mention I routinely hear them near the house, find droppings, and even see them running through the yard every now and then. My question is, if I do decide to take them out, would it be best to do so at night, and if I do draw a pack with bait or a call, accuracy of shooting out of the equation, how many can one usually pick off before they scatter? I don't really wanna resort to leg traps due to the possibility of catching deer or what not.

We have wolves, cyotes rare, wolves eat them. With wolves, you have to be where they are, within a few miles that is. Our wolves follow the caribou migration, when the caribou are hanging around in say a small valley, you'll see wolves if ya sit down at dusk. I always see them walking down the middle of the road at dark (we live rural, no traffic for hours). I dump rotten meat or fish and cover some or in burlap bag maybe 15 yards off road where say a creek crosses. Them wolves will stop to check it out every time. I bet cyotes would come into stinky rotten meat too.

During the deer rut there are many road kills. NOTIFY THE GAME WARDEN OF YOUR INTENTIONS. Place the carcass in a great spot for shooting, use a crow call and some of the other methods mentioned and wait

Just here in the past week, the coyotes have "taken up residence" as they've been away most of the summer.
I have been away from the area for some time but this morning I thought I'd go back and have a look as it was snowing here and cold temps. Winter moved in here real quick.
But, one thing I've found out by trial and error, (just as JLA was talking about, "make shift" calls work great!)
This morning I didnt take any calls back with me as the wind was terrible and snow/rain and cold as heck after being near 80* just this past week. But anyways, I was coming off a ridge in a grown over field and giving out a howl and a few "yipes" and barks as I was headed for a place to pull out of the field to just get my hands warm.

Came out about 10 mins later into the field, and there was 2 of them...came within 75yds of where I was coming out. Time I saw them, they got out to about 200yds and I let out a sharp "yep" (no hand calls) and it stopped them in thier tracks.
The Savage 11 in .204 Ruger, Hornady red tips, 40gr. done it's job on one.
So, it doesnt take "alot" to get'em in....just gotta keep your eyes peeled!

I've found night hunting to be the best all around for producing results with coyotes. When I lived in Indiana, night hunting was allowed and I did well in areas that didn't produce as well in the day.
Here in Colorado, one must obtain permission from the DOW to night hunt, and frankly, they aren't too keen on night hunting.
A shotgun, a red light and a standard caller was all I used on many an occasion, as long as the wind was right I didn't even need cover scents.
Dependent on area, competition for food makes some coyotes far less wary at night.

For real though we pick up a deer carcass off the road or if we shoot one throw whats left in the field and they will come into it.

Do you happen to have a neighbor that just happens to have a tomcat that you don't really like very much ??? All you need to do is to "borrow" your neighbor's cat, put it in an old birdcage, and hang it in a tree. Pretty soon, the cat will start howling that he can't get out, and any coyotes in the area will be on their way to investigate the possibility of a free lunch. Keep in mind, that scent control can play a major factor, so be prepared. Other things that seem to work well ( if your neighbor doesn't have a cat you can use ) are bait piles. If you can add fresh bait every day or two, you can get the coyotes used to coming around to check them, and just set up on the pile. Use chicken, turkey, freezer-burnt meet of any kind, roadkill, almost anything that stinks. I like to use all of these things. Just make sure that your night-vision scope has fresh batteries, and is sighted in... Later on, when there's a bit of snow, you won't need night-vision. ENJOY !

On this note, I live around a Prairie Dog habitat, and this year I've found two cat heads and one dog's head, complete with collar, in the P.D. town.
I've seen one 'yote that looks as big as a small German Shepherd, and very well fed. They've become quite brazen, actually following me while I walked my Rat Terrier along the creek.
My Rat Terrier is fairly smart, he sticks with me when they're around.

I'll have to try the nasal spray bottle trick, that's awesome. I've got a couple predator calls I've been trying out for bear but figured they would more likely attract yotes as there's more of them.

Ran right up on one walking quietly this week, got within 20' of him, nice size one but he vanished into the ferns within a second. Not sure I'd take a shot at one unless I was really bored though, got no use for them. Enough show up to rob the chicken coop, catch them usually in the mornings at first light. Boom goes the shotgun out the bedroom window!

the neighbors love that I'm sure... wake up time! bang bang bang bang...

sorry folks, coyote...
