Default Compromise is over rated!

A lot is made of the divisions in this country and the need for all to compromise and come together. But on many issues there is no room for compromise.

These issues are either or, for example:

Abortion, and the death penalty. What is the middle ground for some one who believes abortion is murder and some one who believes the soul of the child doesn't enter into the child until late in gestation, so for them abortion is o.k.? Or some one that believes that the death penalty is a just punishment based on their religious/moral beliefs and a person who believes that all killing is murder, based on their morals and beliefs?

Thumbs down Re: Compromise is over rated!

If Obama is elected we'll have change alright. But, not the kind we want.

No thanks, keep the change...

This country is seriously lacking in strong moral fibers.... Our nation was founded by Christian men who understood the role of God in this country, and now look...some 230 years later here we are; we've got athiests trying to take away "In God We Trust" from our money, children get barraged by sluts sleaze and teen pregnancy on "family" television, I can't flip past MTV without some piece of trash show about the playboy bunnies or some idiot endorsing drugs or violence... man I could go on, but it would probably be useless.

There is no compromise with issues like that, America needs to square herself away and start righting the wrongs...

Actually, these are EXACTLY the issues people need to compromise on. 17thfabn gives examples of life and death, issues that cannot find a middle ground -- you can't kinda-sorta believe in the death penalty. Either you do, or you don't. Life or death, no middle ground there. But things like morals or religion are a lot harder to nail down. Even if you're Christian, you've got different people that don't get along (Protestant vs. Catholic -- look at Northern Ireland). I'm thinking some compromise there might be a good idea.
I like the U.S. method better. We may not agree, but we compromise -- we live in relative peace with each other.

Believe it or not, as things go in the world, we are kinda in middle. I'm just going use the part of your post about Christians side and the sleaze/sex on TV.

1. Europe public TV makes our programs look G-rated. Nudity, from page 3 girls in the UK to those topless shampoo comercials in Germany, is acceptedable way beyond what we allow. Sex and fetishes are not painted at all as something to be ashamed about.

2. Southwest Asia...look at Saudi Arabia's religious police. Women are put in prison for wearing shorts. Husbands publicly kill wives, sisters, and daughters for things Western women do every day....like have male friends. My last tour in Iraq, one of our informants...his daughter was kidnapped for ransom, and because his association with us was revealed. Before being recovered and returned, she was raped. Her family demanded she be killed to save family honor. We were able to convince them to keep her alive, and they agreed only because we could use her to PID anyone involved still alive from the kidnapping. We believe when out team left they probably went ahead and honor killed her. Imagine the mother and aunts of a rape victim demanding the girl to be killed....it is very real there.

3. United States of America. Last time I checked we allow a lot on TV/Cable...and on DVD/pay-per-view/Internet almost anything goes. Either way no matter what is on channel 34 at 8pm where you live or whatever...if you don't like it you can change the channel.

Out of the 36 countries I've been to I honestly believe we are center of the road in many areas.

Abortion we need to work on and just settle the issue. Death penalty will never be good enough for victims' families, but at least it is not totally banned nation-wide. We have droves of tree-huggers that place more value on some rare owl's life than on a person's life. Etc etc etc.

All these crazy radical people with extreme ideas rocking the boat...but that is the side effect of democracy and individual rights. Better I think than tyranny.
