I just can't understand how someone can be so smart, and so damn stupid. He had the world on a string, had it all; cute wife, two neat kids, a zillion or so dollars in commercial endorsements, etc. Does success of that quantity do something to one's judgement?

It sounds like greed. When a person is accustomed to getting whatever they want, eventually they take what they think they need. That's how I see it, anyway; famous people seem to follow that pattern.
